Miscast Admiral Godfrey

The actor Samuel West was miscast as Admiral Godfrey he was way too young to be an Admiral in the Royal Navy. The biggest faux pas is the goatee beard he is wearing. Goatees and moustaches were and still are not allowed to be worn in the Royal Navy. Full beards can be worn but goatees are verboten.

I have only watched the first episode so far but agree totally with what you say. As soon as I saw the beard I thought "that doesn't look right for the times it's supposed to be set in " and yes, he does look far too young to be an Admiral.
Overall, I thought the whole thing was very lightweight, didn't seem to have much connection with reality and just seemed to be a catalogue of Fleming's sexual conquests. However, I'll stick with it and hope that it gets better.

Maybe the producers wanted him to look like Shaggy from Scooby-Doo in order to attract a younger audience

I agree. It's ridiculous every time Fleming calls him "the old man."
