Another show that cigarette makers really like

Just like The Playboy Club or the Hour
,producers seem to think that if a story
in set in the 60s,they have to show someone
smoking every 10 minutes.

reply

That's exactly what Fleming did. He smoked up to 70 cigarettes a day and that along with a bottle of gin put him in an early grave.

reply

If they want to be accurate they do. Smoking was extremely common and cigarettes were part of the soldier's rations.

Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.

"Smoke'em if ya got 'em" and I think anyone who smokes (or, sigh, grew up with a smoker) is aware, 5 minutes is about how long it takes to smoke a cig. And submarines had a light called the smoking lamp. If it was on you could smoke, usually because the boat was on the surface.

A huge portion of the adult population of most industrialized countries smoked then and up through the early 60's.

If they want to be accurate they do.

So everything in this tv series is 100% accurate?

No, of course not. Many things will be changed for greater dramatic impact. The smoking at the time is an easy detail to get right though, and it adds verisimilitude. Why would you want them to not smoke when you know good and well that everyone did at the time and that goes double for Ian Fleming?

"The triumph of intellect and romance over brute force and cynicism."

reply

And thank god for that.
I fear the moment they start to make movies where they try and erase historical details like that because modern day society goes insane if someone even mentions a cigarette.
When I see people smoking a lot in historical dramas set in this era I think to myself; "Oh good, at least one detail they got right."

Complaining about mistakes is almost as bad as complaining about complaining about mistakes.

reply

Flemming actually smoked many more cigarettes per day than they showed in this show, in the tune of 80 cigarettes actually. This had nothing to do with tobacco promotion, only realism.

Fanboy : a person who does not think while watching.

reply

Uh,,that's the way it was back then.

Drag out your family picture album from those days. Odds are you will see people smoking and DRINKING ALCOHOL.

These days your doctor is your drug connection. Thousands of people die these days from prescribed drugs. In some cities they have clinics with thugs maintaining order while script writers pump out prescriptions to addicts standing in line.

I don't know everything. Neither does anyone else
