WAY too big a part of the story line. Granted this was an 'unhealthy' relationship from start to finish but I can do without the repeated grinding and sexual violence.
I thought this was the worst part of the series. I was rather bored by it but I thought all of the sex seemed contrived...all the heavy breathing and grunting bored me...YAWN...
It wasn't the contrived heavy breathing and grunting so much that bothered me - - - It was the actual physical/sexual abuse. The battering. The sexual violence. Not necessary and don't need to see it.
S/M, etc. was a big part of Ian Fleming and Ann O'Neill's relationship. I found it a bit disturbing on screen here, and I think you're absolutely supposed to.
"The triumph of intellect and romance over brute force and cynicism."
Those who were lucky enough to visit Goldeneye, Ian Fleming's Jamaican retreat, could never understand how the Flemings went through so many wet towels.
But those sodden towels were needed, literally, to cool their fiery partnership, used to relieve the stinging of the whips, slippers and hairbrushes the pair beat each other with - Ian inflicting pain more often than Ann - as well as to cover up the weals Ian made on Ann's skin during their fiery bouts of love-making.
And like their love-making, their relationship was complex, passionate, often shocking.
Each was tormented by the other - but it was this painful torment which kept their marriage on the road.
In a consensual relationship, yes; but, sometimes the relationships are not consensual. It has been used, in many cases, as a form of sexual abuse. There was a case in the Carolina region, when I was stationed there in the Navy, where a husband forced non-consensual BDSM acts upon his wife, essentially raping her. However, the jury acquitted him because they had a past history of consensual BDSM, though there was a lot of question about consenting the wife had ever been. The husband filmed the session and newspaper accounts suggested that the terror of the wife did not appear to be an act.
I also read of a case where a father or step-father used BDSM acts to "teach hsi daughter how to drive." When she made mistakes he would use BDSM-style punishments, including tying her to the bumper of the vehicle, using a ballgag on her, and dumping dirt over her head.
The difference is the legal consent of the parties involved.
Fortunately, Ah keep mah feathers numbered for just such an emergency!
you can sexually abuse someone without using BDSM, so BDSM doesn't equalize sexual abuse, it's a fetish, for example someone likes to be urinated upon while most of course consider it humiliating. People need to be more open to fetishes and new ways of sexuality.

Everything is equally true if we assume the word "it" in your sentence means "sex". Just sex, not BDSM or any particular type of sex. Sex.
"In a consensual relationship, yes; but sometimes the relationships are not consensual. Sex has been used, in many cases, as a form of (sexual) abuse." Duh! Obviously true.
So, if all BDSM is wrong and disturbing because some people use such practices to abuse others, does that mean all sex is wrong and disturbing because there are people who rape?
I didn't know much about Ian Fleming's personal life. This short series was excellent.
There are mainstream Hollywood produced movies in which male/female relationships have been depicted with much more more violence. The Flemings, as depicted in this production came across as somewhat kinky, not perverted. 😉
