Five people or six in the expedition?

When they start out on the expedition with the guide and through most of the film, I was aware of only five people:

Jonathan Venkenhein; Vicky; Carl (the guide); Eric (the camera operator); and Kevin (the sound man). These five people are the only ones who are seen and heard. Apparently someone named "Luke" is along and is the one doing all the camera work when we see all five of the others together, although "Luke" is never acknowledged until he goes off on the remaining snow mobile for help after Carl's body is discovered. Later, during the search party, Kevin finds a body sitting by a tree and we see his face for the first time. Is this "Luke", the silent camera operator we have never seen or heard during the whole film?
Confusing.

Yeah I thought that. Where did he pop up from?

There were two camera operators. Look at the scene of Carl talking about his friend dying. You'll notice two different camera takes.

It's true that there had to be two cameras all along, but it's pretty incredible that nobody mentions or even acknowledges Luke's presence until the plot requires it. Pretty sloppy and leads one to think the character was introduced late in the process when they realized they needed to explain two camera POVs.

I was similarly confused. I was only aware of the sound man, video man, Vicky, Venk, and then the addition of Karl. It wasn't until they were on snowmobiles and included a shot of 2 people a piece on 2 snowmobiles that I realized there MUST be a 6th person, since someone WAS filming, and if he was filming the other 4, someone had to be driving so he could do so. I'm exactly one hour in right now & had to take a break coz I was too curious to find out if I was right, that there is a 6th.
Glad I'm not the only person who was confused by that!

Did all of you guys really miss Luke? He was the first guy presented in the movie. During the scene were the professor and his wife have a fight and they are ears dropping we get to see him with the text "Luke Hill, Camera Operator".

Also, he's the guy filming most of the time. 5 people + camera guy = 6.

They do mention him sometimes. Like in the car ride with the wet finger in the ear joke the guy said "Luke, are you laughing?".

Thanks for clearing it up. I regularly kinda space out at the beginning of films I'm not sure I really wanna watch. And, though it's been quite a while since I saw this show, I remember being really consumed by the beginning...wasn't there a scene in the car where it just seemed super foreboding but then nothing happened? Strange. But yeah. I guess it's easy to forget about the cameraman and that s/he's involved when it comes to a found footage type show.

Yeah Luke is mostly invisible for the majority of the movie, so I can see how some viewers might have overlooked him after his brief appearance in the opening scene.

reply

Yeah, confused me too. Poor ole Luke. Red shirt man of the crew.
