I don't get it ... Plot hole?


Why would the guard go down, check if he's dead, bag him up and then leave the bag untied to the rope and then climb back up? What's the purpose other than allowing the Count to escape? Why not have the second guard come down while waiting to tie him to the rope OR tie the rope to the bag and then go up and they both pull him up. Am I missing something here? Or is this just a glaring plot hole?

Remember, the cell belonged to Faria, not Edmond. The guard climbed down when Faria did not respond. He then confirmed that Faria was dead by stabbing him and only after that did he bring the bag into the cell.

Of course the guard has no idea that there is a passage way between Faria's cell and Edmond's.
