Why not just kill him?

So without becoming a prominent chariot racer in Rome with a support of an influential man returning to Jerusalem wouldn't have been just another death sentence?
He was an escaped prisoner, I think they would have just killed him without a question.

Since he was sentenced to be a galley slave, why not throw him back in another galley?

Or that, yes. I liked some of the changes they made, but I think this one opened up a plothole.

Exactly. In the 1959 classic Judah returned to Jerusalem as a freedman, a Roman citizen, and the adopted son of a Roman Consul - basically superior to everyone in Judea exept Pilate himself. Here his status is questionable at best. I didn't hear 'No one touch Judah before the race' (see The Karate Kid) in the deal between Pilate and Ilderim.

It would have made for a much shorter story and less of a waste of time. Aside from all the other inaccuracies, they absolutely 100% would have ended him, immediately.

well, to be fair, he wasn't really an escaped prisoner. the ship crashed, he just swam away

reply

That is a pretty weak argument. It is not like you are free when your bus crashes that takes you to prison, much less so in Roman times.

I know. Just kidding. I also found it improbable that he was allowed to race and nobody said anything about him being a prisoner

Because of the money being wagered that Morgan Freeman's character put up. BTW Morgan Freeman was the true hero of the story. He coached Ben Hur at almost every lap. He arranged the race and backed it risking a lot of money.
