what was the point of the Jesus subplot?

The main story didn't need him at all, as this was all about family tragedy and drama between two brothers...or did he somehow influence the lives and destinies of the two brothers? The movie never made a clear connection between him and the brothers, just some random encounters and the end crucification scene, which seemed totally out of place to begin with

It's a family tragedy and drama set in Judea 20s-30s AD.
Furthermore, Jesus' role is not without basis. This film is based on a novel whose subtitle is 'A Tale of the Christ.' (A title shared by the 1925 and 1959 versions).
Then again, I haven't seen this adaptation, and based on the reviews I've read, maybe the importance of Jesus in this version could be like you relate.

Ben Hur, the novel by Lew Wallace, has the complete title of Ben Hur, a Tale of the Christ. If anything, Jesus should have played an even more prominent role. The 1959 movie version, like the book, begins with the birth of Christ, as did the 1925 silent movie version.

Talking about missing what was great about the epic Original

I am missing something?

The Tile scene is great; they dont write movies like they used to

1. The tile scene shows the innocence getting crushed in war and occupation

2. The two women were Messala's friends who he grew up and cared for him, the sister was supposed to marry him?

3. Messala knew there was clear evidence of corroding tiles, but he still condemned them

4. The Revenge: the ladies are condemned and contracted leprosy

5. Ben Hur after all his trials and hardship eventually set aside his revenge, as he watched some dude by the name of Jesus cure his mother and sister....

I mean, you cannot write a better Revenge-redemption story like that any more...

I am about to watch the new version, but already the two main leads have no charisma

Subplot?? Jesus is the center of the story. Everything else is the "subplot.." Reading these posts i have to wonder if ANYONE reads books anymore..

Maybe not very old books but maybe have seen old films, like the Charlton Heston where Ben Hur eventually became a Christian and gave water to Jesus.

It's that man again!!

reply

Yes, every film version of "Ben-Hur" includes Jesus. It's because he is such an integral part of the story, which is really about redemption and faith. And the struggle between Judah & Messala is merely symbolic of the religious persecution of the believers in Christ by the Romans. So the suggestion of removing the "spiritual stuff" from "Ben-Hur" is so outrageously ignorant. In fact it's downright hilarious..

Jesus was the plot.

When he died for us, he changed the world from a world of hate to forgiveness. He changed the main characters from living off hatred to love.

Nobody else can do that. That is why he is in the movie.

reply

Well... the world is still full of hate, so your fairytale figurine kinda failed.

reply

The world was an evil place then and it is still an evil place. The goal wasn't to save the world it was to save us.

I guess you haven't thought about it much.

reply

Was an evil place? Since when? Adam and Eve ate the apple from the Tree of Knowledge? I know knowledge is evil to the abrahamic religions. They want stupid sheep that can easily be controlled by *beep*

So, when will you be saved? After you die? Good luck claiming that prize.

reply

Read the news. Seems like you are the sheep if you think the world isn't as evil place.

reply

The world isn't evil, but it does have evil in it. It also has plenty of good and morally neutral.

reply

Jesus was in the novel, his teachings are the heart of the story. Watch it again.
