Was Actually Pretty Good...Bashers of the film made me watch it.

I have seen the original a long time ago and I thought this was good too even though it felt somewhat less grandeur in scale. People are complaining how this movie "sucks" and at the same time asking why was Jesus in it? And this is just self-explanatory how some people just trash the film expecting it to be something which is not and this attitude was the reason why I watched the film for myself and enjoyed it. I got pretty sick of the experts here.

It was ok - better than I thought it would be - but entirely redundant. That's the biggest issue with this film, it just doesn't need to exist - there is a well regarded 30s and 50s version, which this one just can't compete with. A lot of films nowadays are redundant though, all the remakes and soft reboots so, meh, it ends up being a pointlessly inoffensive waste of money. The sooner Hollywood crashes, the better.

That said, there were 2 really cool bits - the roman captive tied to the front of the Greek galley when it rammed (did they really do that back then? That was awesome) and the way it introduced the charioteers from all over the Roman world (or modern approximations of the historical places, anyway).

Gore Vidal was right. The basic story is bad and here it shows.

they messed so much from the 1959 version, just to be different? why?

In the 1959 version it was Ben Hur who helped Jesus, its reverse here....And the sedition rubbish.

In the original they helped each other in turn, just as in this version.

The sedition issue was always there. Rome was conquering other countries just because they could -- they didn't like it any more then than they do now.

Yeah i watched it before reading any reviews on it and really enjoyed it.

If i read about it first i might have been turned off from it and the commies and athiests would have loved that.

Going forward that's what i will be doing for ALL movies.

*beep* reviews and agenda driven commentaries. I will watch it myself and see.
