Why is the show not starting again until Jan 2017?
Last year the show began in October 2015.
This is crap. What the hell is going on?

Officially (per CW's boss) they wanted to give their newer shows a shot by starting them off in the fall.
Unofficially, the show isn't doing so well now. It steadily lost viewers this past season.
If the CW cancels one of the best shows of this type genre I am going to be really pissed.
I don't think I've ever seen a young actor as intense on the screen as Joseph Morgan is about this character. Evil yes, but exciting to watch and see what he'll do next.
Oh, and I noticed the popularity is up on the IMDB page.
They've made a lot of mistakes by killing off popular characters which may be the show's downfall in the end, like too many family members.
But I'm hoping the CW will give TO time to redeem itself with some great writers and story lines.
It's time for the show to move forward.
We get great performances from most of the cast, it's the writing that turned so many people off. I'm not very hopeful that a shorter season will help that, to be honest.
Disagree about family members, though. This is a show about the original vampires. I wanted a show about them and their family. Yet Klaus and Elijah are the only ones who stay put.
I think TO will likely face cancellation if season 4 doesn't improve ratings. But to do that, they really need a better grip on writing.
Agreed. Also, I don't see the ratings improving in Season 4. The network doesn't even advertise the show anymore.
sharehehe their new shows aren't doing well. talking about frequency and no tomorrow. would be surprised if they got another season.

Well, any number of people predicted the current path of the CW was going to bite them... I didn't even suspect it would start this season with most of their line-up. I thought Crazy Ex-Girlfriend would end up being a joke but instead their aired new shows would surprise me to get any kind of backorder, Arrow has dropped to 0.6 (which is arguably led by a decision to fridge the Black Canary for a ship) and Legends of Tomorrow last week premiered to 0.6, and if it can't hold onto at least that and plunges to TVD's last season levels... it's a second season show that gets renewed for two seasons.
The CW has three shows in decent territory, of which one is an import from CBS and the other a veteran. Supergirl might get a hard landing yet (hopefully it stabilizes- actually enjoyed the first two episodes) and Supernatural's end date comes when the leads are finished. They might have even gone backwards in terms of progress.
Basically? They got overconfident and it's bitten them hard.

Like many believe this is probably their last season.
Only getting 13 episodes is the "kiss of death" for this type show.
They had such a great thing going then screwed it up.
The writers should step up to the plate and make this show great again.
The Originals was so much better than The Vampire Diaries.
It is the year of men in tights, and few women if they don't die. Vampires and Zombies are unfashionable, even if much more compelling, and therefore bumped back to midseason.

This show is on it's last legs they just didn't want a riot by cancelling both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals all at the same time. They're forcing viewers to get used to shows that are more like Jane the Virgin which is why "No Tomorrow" is on after The Flash. They spread them out so you'll get weened off supernatural shows(never going to happen).
For some odd reason The CW execs don't want us watching the genre that made The WB a success. The CW is only a success because of those kinds of shows.
What they should've done is get rid of Julie Plec and showrunners like her because they ruin shows with their weird fanfic style format.
But back on topic yeah this show is over. They'll make a random announcement in the summer that it's not coming back next season.

There have been rumors going around that ABC might pick it up if The CW cancels it.
Maybe life is a dream and we wake up when we die?
Why would the ABC pick it up? I know of one show they picked up late series and it was a show they produced. The Originals is a WB property and to reverse the ratings decline would require a massive advertisement blitz. The CW, were they to get desperate would have a hard enough time reversing their own damage.

Here is a link to a bunch of stories having to do with The Originals, 2 or 3 different sources have mentioned the ABC rumor. As I said it is just a rumor?

I think it's time to cancel the show. If they are able to find a decent replacement then this will probs be their final season. That's what networks do.
