Question aboutStarting this

So I have seen tiny bits of The Vamp Diares. I didn't care for it. It was a little teenish for me. I am hoping I'll like this one better and the reviews I have read seem to make me think I'll like it better. Still my question is do I NEED to watch TVD before watching this ??

No, you don't need to watch TVD and they are two different shows, so there's a good chance you will enjoy this. They were smart enough to establish the universe as self-sustaining in The Originals without needing to go back to TVD to explain things every other episode.

Let me start by saying that i do hate teeny shows too. They lack emotional connect for me. I ADORE this show. There's nothing teeny in this show. The dialogues and acting are so matured. The two lead actors never seize to amuse you. I just can't wait for the next season.

In my opinion TVD felt teenish rainbows and unicorns, so I've never even bothered to touch that show.

Thanks for the replays. Especially since you share my feelings towards the teen drama.

TVD looses the Twilight style teen feeling pretty fast. TO can stand alone, but the cast was great also in TVD seasons 2, 3 and 4.

My girlfriend told me the same. That it loses that feel quickly. Maybe I'll try it.

I myself would recommend watching watching The Vampire Diaries up until season 4 and then watching The Originals so that you really know the characters before you start the spin off. While it's designed to be as seperate as possible that anyone can watch it, I thought it was nice following these characters throughout their very lengthy time on TVD and then getting to see them stand on their own for the spin off. While TVD does lose it's "teen drama" feel sooner than you'd expect, The Originals still feels much more "mature" in that it doesn't feel like teenage girls are the target audience. There's no in-your-face love triangles or vampires that hate themselves and want to be good guys. It's full of blood, action, tension, drama and compelling characters and storylines.

I will say though, up until like mid-season 5, The Vampire Diaries was really damn good. Like, I binged it all so quick because I was thoroughly enjoying it. The whole love triangle between Elena, Stefan and Damon drove me nuts and I could never stand Damon anyway, but it had great side characters (Caroline, Bonnie, Katherine, The Original family). The Originals and Katherine was definitely the best thing about the show for me so when they left at the end of S4, Katherine was the only thing keeping me interested in S5. Then she left too. Bonnie and Caroline were just not given any storylines worth investing my time in and Elena and Damon took up too much screen time. Ugh. How the mighty fall.

I haven't watched TVD since about 7 episodes into Season 6. Should have ended with Season 5, that finale was great. There's only so much DAMON ANGST AHHHHHH that I can take.
