Missed Opportunities...

I'm curious if fans of the show think there were moments of missed opportunity for the show runners.

I'm mainly thinking about story lines, characters, or relationships that the show started to touch on, but ended early and had they continued them and brought them to fruition could have enhanced the show.

Although, not my example, an example lots of people would use would be Klaroline. Lots of people think the show runners missed an opportunity to expand on their relationship, which hurt the shows popularity.

Some of my thoughts on missed opportunities:

Season 1:

The casket girls story line and alliances that could have been interesting and added a new dynamic of enemies and allies on the show.

Exploring Celeste and Elijah's relationship more.

Season 2:

More conflict between the supernatural species. The Guerra's died too soon.

Marcel and Elijah's alliances explored more.

Elijah and Gia's relationship. I liked them more than Hayley and Elijah, although Haylijah is growing on me a little more.

Season 3:

The conflict between Elijah and Klaus could have been more potent, and lasted longer. It wasn't as dark as it could have been (in my opinion).

More conflict between the Strix and The Originals.

Klaus's enemies brought in earlier and to a greater degree. There was too much time on Lucien's beast form.

Freya's witch powers and her relationship with her brothers.

Anyways those are what I think are the greatest missed opportunities on the show. I think that any one of these things could have enhanced the show. Do you guys think has missed any opportunities? If you do, what do you think they are?

The biggest missed opportunity is have the show actually be about the Originals, not a hybrid and a baby. They killed off half the actual Originals just to make the show about a kid that most of the fandom hates. When people 1st heard about the spin off they thought it was going to actually be about the Mikaelsons. All of them. Klaus, Elijah, Rebekah, Kol with Finn, Mikael, Esther in flashbacks unless they were resurrected. But instead the show focus on 80% Hayley, Hope, Klaus, Hayley-Klaus drama, Hayley-Elijah drama, Klaus-Elijah drama and 20% everything else. And yet the writers think everyone loves Hope and thinks she's the best thing to ever happen. When in reality shes the worst, not only is she one of if not the biggest plot hole in both series combined, the show also focuses way to much on her. And that crap about her supposedly being the most powerful witch in the world, I am 100% certain these writers dont actually watch this show. Proven by all the continuity errors and plot holes.

And yet I still watch it. Cause though it is beyond stupid sometimes, there are certain characters I like, certain storylines i can deal with, so i watch.

Though i will say this, whatever problem i have with Hayley and Hope, it would have been 100 times worse if Klaroline had been a part of the show. Cause while Klaus knocking up some chick is beyond idiocy, at least him staying with them and protecting them makes sense. It would not in the tiniest bit ever make sense with Klaroline, because Caroline hates Klaus and would never go with him anywhere, so to have her there he would have to force her which is bad. And logically speaking Klaus shouldnt care for her either since she's done nothing for him.

It's interesting you say this. I was certain when they first started to talk about an Originals spin-off that it would be flashbacks. I forgot about that until I read your response. I was actually really disappointed when I realized it was not going to be set in the past, and it took me a VERY long time enjoy the show for what it was. I watched it when it came on live every week, but I wasn't as invested. It took until the end of the 2nd Season for me to appreciate the show. I still think I would have enjoyed a history of The Originals better though.

I agree about Klaroline as well. Not just for the reasons you listed, but because they never made sense as a couple to me. What would they share? What would they talk about? It's also the way I felt about Haylijah. I never thought that Elijah or Klaus could be with modern women. When I say modern, I mean in the sense they grew up in modern times, not in any ideological sense. I always thought they would both pick women who were unique, incredibly intelligent, and deep and complex. I never thought Hayley or Caroline could fit that for them. In truth, I don't think Cami or Gia fit for Klaus and Elijah respectively, but I think they were better choices.

Sorry for my rant, always interesting to see what other people think. Thanks for the response!

Most of the romance on this show doesn't work, but I do think Haylijah makes sense even though I don't really care for the couple.

Elijah seemed to fit better with Celeste, but all of his love interests had issues with Klaus and he will always choose Klaus over anyone else. So here's Hayley, someone whose uterus was able to bring Klaus down a bit and understand that he needs to do better for the sake of their child.

It's still a bit icky for him to fall in love with Hayley, but I understand why Elijah loves her. Plus, Klaus won't kill her, so Elijah is safe in having his love interest remain alive.

Had she not gotten pregnant I don't think he'd care about her, but I think she'd like him because he gives off the impression that he's stable, which is something Hayley probably seeks out in life.

I still don't like the couple, but I do get it...if Jackson never appeared I think I might root for them, but they did him dirty so I can't.

Instead of playing Jackson/Hayley wedding with that binding(?) ritual, they should have gone with Klaus/Hayley and during their courtship developed that relationship like they did in the show. Throughout the series they have been hinting on us that Klaus may adopt his werewolf side, his father also hinting on him becoming the king to werewolves, his pack was there but they never explored that. Why didn't they do that instead of playing Jayley angle? Hayley and Klaus both had same kind of role in their respective packs. Both of their father's were alpha so they were considered "alpha" too. Not to mention their daugher had blood ties with both original packs. that alone would have earned loyalty from both packs. Anyways..

Red door angle: Should have explored it further. Apart from Klaus and the audience no one knows that side of Elijah. They all think he is noble and cannot do any wrong whereas he has this twisted background and reason for hiding it behind that whole persona he presents. They should have explored it. Shown some actual growth in Elijah's character.

I do agree with you on Gia/Elijah angle. But like you I have come to terms with Haylijah. It is like when something is kept on telling us we start to believe it, not because it is convincing but because it is drilled into us again and again through interviews "Hayley loves Elijah and he loves her..."

Elijah helping vampires angle was really good. Should have explored further. He needed to have a story of his own.

OOO the biggest one Camille. They should have had her play real psychologist to the whole family and most of NOLA, not just limit her to Klaus and give us some flashbacks of those "therapy sessions" after her death in season 3 to provide fan service.

KLaus pack story was dropped suddenly. It should have been explored further...

Father K... ... They should have continued to have let that priest angle play out. He should have continued to guide these misguided vampires/ supernatural.

Marcel and Hayley angle. Marcle saved Hayley. She used to like him. She was his friend until Elijah decided to off him. They didnt handle that well.

The conflict between Elijah and Klaus could have been more potent, and lasted longer. It wasn't as dark as it could have been (in my opinion).

Agreed... IMO they both wronged each other many times over the period of 1000 years. We saw example of two of his major wrongs in season 3 but he gets off very easily both by Klaus and other characters as well as audience. It is the most annoying thing.. they never have Elijah face consequences of his actions. He mops for one episode and everyone is coddling him whereas Klaus does something wrong, everyone is scolding him. Even now he killed Marcel, caused others to suffer, mark my words, he will get off easily. The only consequence will be him missing five years with the love of his life and nothing else.

I want their conflict to be real. I want KLaus to retaliate for what he did to Elijah. What he said to Hayley "if it were Hope..." he would follow his own thinking on that.

Elijah gets off things very easily. (in my opinion).

Season 1:

Klaus and Hayley's relationship. Not in a romantic way, but as two people who want to make sure their daughter has a better upbringing than they did.

Same with Klaus and Marcel. If he's a father figure to Marcel, then I wanted to see more of that than what we got.

Kieran and the human faction. He has a room filled with stuff, but then he gets hexed. :(

Celeste and Elijah's relationship.

Eve? Was that her name? The one who gave Hayley the book and was killed by the blond werewolf. There was a lot of potential there, but nope.

Season 2:

The Guerrera's were hyped to be a big baddy and then wiped clean within the first episode. Lame. They should have had a more powerful presences, especially since they're a mafia family with ties to everyone.

If we saw the Guerreras rise to power and had Marcel try to build his army, then this would have been a lot more interesting.

Then we could have had the Guerreras & Mama Mikaelson with her team of witches (since I'm assuming they'd team up) vs. the vampires, some witches, werewolves & the Originals.

Then Dahlia appears and things shift with everyone going against her.

Season 3:

Elijah and Marcel's relationship.

Freya trying to find her place with her family, instead of being the designated babysitter.

The Strixs coming into town where there's a shaky alliance between the Guerreras, witches, werewolves and vamps would be really interesting. If they somehow pulled everyone together to turn against the Originals...they would have seemed even more dangerous.

Having Klaus' line slowly start becoming human once their link with him was severed. So instead of being immortal and strong, they slowly weaken. (Those who are older take the longest). Then, everyone would rush to try to find a way to link back to Klaus, but he gets cocky since everyone needs him now.
