Saw VIII will determine this movie's fate.

Think about it. Texas Chainsaw 3D was made to act as Lionsgate's new horror movie money-making machine after they concluded Saw 3D in 2010. Texas Chainsaw 3D was supposed to make a lot of money, and the five surviving main characters were under contract to be in the sequels. The film was deemed to fail the moment they decided to push the release date forward from October 2012 to the dumping ground known as January of 2013. The film still did poorly, and the actors contracts were cancelled, along with whatever story-line the writers were coming up with.

Then this prequel comes around, got made a few years ago, and has been toyed with by the studio, who has ran this thing with multiple test audiences, along with re-shoots, and it has remained shelved. After the first year, or year and a half, of this movie being shelved, news of Saw VIII began to spread. Why bring Saw back? Because the studio has lost faith with the Texas Chainsaw Massacre films. More than likely, Saw VIII will include a teaser trailer for this movie before Saw VIII airs. If Saw VIII does bad, not only does any hope for a continuation of the Saw story-line go down the drain, but so does seeing this movie get released theatrically. If Saw VIII does good, prepare to see this movie in theaters in January of 2018.

I was just thinking this same exact thing. So if Saw VIII does bad do you think we see a direct to video release of this? or would do they just scrap it completely? Also, do you think that Saw VIII has any sort of impact on a new Friday the 13th film?

If Saw VIII does bad, I think Lionsgate will not release Leatherface until the rights are close to expiring; kind of the same thing Dimension Films has been doing with Hellraiser, so far with Revelations and the upcoming Judgment. When Lionsgate gets to that point of losing the rights, they'll probably release the movie, regardless if its Direct to DVD or Theatrical. If not, they surprisingly might keep it shelved like All American Massacre, an incomplete movie starring Bill Moseley as Chop Top, and directed by William Hooper, Tobe Hooper's son. If it gets shelved, and never released, the rights will be bought by someone else.

And no, as far as my knowledge goes, Saw VIII will have no effect on a new Friday the 13th film. Paramount currently owns the rights to FT13, which will will expire in 2018. Paramount gave the green light for a new FT13 film to be made and released by October of this year, but cancelled it after one of their other horror movie sequels, Rings, failed to make a box office hit back in February. The rights to FT13 will expire and go back to Warner Bros. However, there is supposed talk that the original writer of the first FT13 film, Victor Miller, is fighting to obtain control and ownership of the rights to the franchise. I don't know if that is still going on, but unless the Friday the 13th franchise is owned by Lionsgate, I don't see Saw VIII having any impact on it at all. I personally would rather keep the Friday the 13th franchise dead. I also would rather keep TCM and Saw dead as well, but Hollywood still thinks banking on nostalgia or familiar content will bring in box office numbers, when it really doesn't most of the time.
