So now there are only 871 humans left?

CJ told Theo that 300 people had never been awakened.

571 were put back into cryo.

So there are now a total of 871 humans that can repopulate the earth, whenever they are awakened, if there is a season 3.

I hope the first episode at least shows what happened to the 500 that were left alive in the town, and whether or not the abbies attacked.

You're probably correct on all counts. My question is, can 871 humans successfully repopulate the earth? That is, is 871 enough to avoid genetic degeneration? I had the idea that a "safe" number to repopulate would have been in the hundreds of thousands. Maybe someone with more understanding of genetics could chime in here.

Adam and Eve did it right?

But yeah, don't ask how. 

reply

Adam and Eve were closer to perfection when they had children. As their offspring began to degenerate over time their lifespans became shorter as well. So Pilcher needed a much wider pool of humans to populate.

reply

It might be enough with 32 humans. That is what I have heard before and that is what I got from googling.

reply

I've read that 50 to 150 mated pairs is enough to repopulate an endangered mammal species.

reply

If there are many seasons to come, the writers could easily add some plot like they find a secret message from Pilcher that there are many pods secretly built and Group D are stored in California mountain or something like that.

reply

Or someone else also realized it and they had not come out of sleep yet.

reply

Or they have lots of already fertilized and frozen eggs stored in liquid nitrogen containers. Takes small space, provides genetic variety. You only need females for obvious reasons.

reply

That would have actually been a smart idea.

Happy birthday to the ground!

Some interesting discussion of the minimum population needed to maintain species viability.

In short 871 individuals might not be enough, especially since some (e.g. Arlene) appear past reproductive age. One thing in Pilcher's favor, he did seem pretty careful to maximize population diversity, improving the odds of species survival.

reply

>A minimum population of 500 could guard against inbreeding, they conclude.

Actually 871 is pleny enough to guard against genetic inbreeding. Also, that research assumes a single tribe. WP is a varied collection of human sub-species.

reply

Humans are all one species. There is genetic diversity with plenty of different races, but of course one species.

reply

870 people left. After CJ went under, we slipped in and removed a sapien from one of the pods and put an abby volunteer in their place. When they wake in the future, he will pop out and warn whoever is living in the area what total ass holes sapiens are.

reply

My husband and I are rooting for you! Though, now that most of the dumb humans have been killed off, we may change our minds in Season 3. But thank you so much for killing Megan!!!!!

reply

More than 871. A decent number of the females going into stasis were with child already.

The people in Wayward Pines have repeatedly demonstrated a lack in intelligence the condemns them to extinction as soon as the stored food, clothing and weapons run out. It doesn't really matter how much gas is in the car if it's a lemon.
