Ethan got abducted. His wife and kid looked for him. They got abducted too.
2000 years later, Ethan got waken up. A few days later, his wife and kid got waken up.
The editing makes it look like they are time traveling. They are not. The chronology of the story is the same as real-time.
If you watch the show this is all answered (as opposed to 1000 other things that aren't).
So many people still think this show's about time travel.
