any news on what happened behind the scenes? Why dropped story lines?
Like ben, Theresa, Kate, that wasn't story telling.
That was actors being written off.
Mostly because of actor availability. Season 1 was filmed well over a year before it debuted in the summer of 2015. When they started season 2, most actors had moved on to other projects, so they wrote what they could within the actors schedules.

Why didn't they just tell different people's stories and limited the actors to guest appearances. The ending of the first season would have been perfect for such a switch. Just pulling the skywalker: a resistance group trying to find Ben because they think he would know more about the Abbies, with him only appearing in the last two episodes or whatever.
It is not just the stumps of last years stories, but also those they created this season. Why did they start so much they were not interested in elaborating on?
