They're still in current times. It's all a psychological game. At the top of the hill when you break out of the town, is a projected hologram of a fake destroyed city.

I've watched the first series only. From the little I've perused here, it sounds like the second series isn't worth it.
shareBy the end of the first season, its shown it isn't a government experiment set in the present day. The second season continues to prove it. Like I said, others have floated that theory and it just doesn't hold up after watching the show.
