Worst name for a movie
What the *beep* is such kind of name for movie? '71 !!!!
shareThat's the year it was set - 1971
sharewhilst this is true, i have to say, i didn't know the significance of the title. i reckon it goes with the film's minimalist approach (no tagline!?) so it makes sense in this way, but it did puzzle me.
shareI think the title is also great because it hammers down that this was just 40 years ago. Not some distance land or some distance time. The title kept me thinking about that a rule of mob and violence existed just a few decades ago.
You can't call the police, you can't call the ambulance. If you are seen doing something one of those *beep* sides don't like you get shot.
The whole movie reminded me of ISIS and how similar it is when the ugly part of human nature comes through.
"Worst name for a movie"?
Not at all. Dejay summs it up perfectly.
If you want worse names, how about:
Sssssss (1973)
Phffft (1954)
Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever (2002)
Monsturd (2003)
Eegah (1962)
.....just to name a few 😉
Two for flinching!
With respect, most people who know what 'The Troubles' were will take one look at the cover (British soldier in 1970s kit with an SLR walking down a terraced street) and instantly know what '71 means.
Those who don't know will likley have seen the trailer...
Well i'm not British that might explain why I didn't pick that up.
And I try not to see trailers or else didn't see one ahead of viewing. And I genuinely thought it was some kind of french movie what with yann demange etc.
I solely relied on kermode for it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P10Pg1hWnsg this is kermode reviewing the film.
i sometimes don't want to watch trailer because i think it'll give too many things away. basically, the review did that for me. but i didn't *see* it prior to seeing it, if that makes sense.
it all depends on how much the trailer invokes atmostphere or just tells you.
i'm too young to know about the troubles in NI firsthand. i'm glad the film takes a perspective of not knowing what's in store for the people. that is my favourite kind of history.
Oh, it's a person. I see...
Well,I can understand not watching the trailer, but surely any quick one-line 'What's it about?' would give someone enough info tell that '71 means 1971 and is about the NI conflict?
Trailers are pretty useful IMO. So many awful time-wasting films can be avoided by watching trailers.
As for being that young, you are blessed.
I think the significance of the title is the fact that 1971 was the year in which internment was introduced in Northern Ireland by the then British Prime Minister, Brian Faulkner. By implementing internment, Nationalists and Republicans felt a sense of injustice, heavy-handedness and inequality (to an extent, you can't blame them, as this often had the implications of wrongful incarceration and brutal house raids by the RUC; on the other hand, it was, at times, warranted and justified); basically, they felt undermined and threatened by the implementation of such a measure. While 1971 wasn't the most violent, sanguinary and volatile year per se, it certainly exacerbated the tensions within both communities; for example, when it was immediately put into effect, Norther Ireland witnessed "The Ballymurphy Massacre" and an immediate rise in violence, and it's noteworthy that 1972 still remains the most violent year in the history of the troubles. Had internment been introduced at the beginning of 1971 as opposed to August that year, then I'm sure it would've been the worst year in terms of volatility and fatalities.
shareIndeed, when they chosensuch short generic names it brings trouble when searching for warez links! Maybe the best example was the movie named "O".
The best - Fight Club, American Beauty & Falling Down.
