A Troubles action film

So, this is basically a Troubles action film... I think it does have pretensions to being something more intelligent and, to be fair, it does show that things in Northern Ireland were / are more complex than one side against another, with internal struggles going on in both factions... Of course, it's not necessarily cinema's job to educate. But, if you're going to set a film in a very definite historical period, you do need to provide proper context... I think, if this had been entirely from Gary Hook's point of view, a certain amount of confusion and chaos would have been fine. But, as the Loyalist and Nationalist paramilitaries, the MRF and the regular army also play a major part in the film, I think more context is needed and anyone who knows little or nothing about that particular conflict may struggle to know what's going on... Having said that, this is very watchable and, while he has relatively little dialogue, Jack O'Connell is excellent.

It's not an 'action' film, in the slightest.

I'd class it as a thriller, if anything.

It's not really meant to be about The Troubles, so much as just set in them.
At this point, knowing anything more than the basics (Catholics vs Protestants, with both sides not wanting the Army there) does not really add much.

It's got the same sort of feel as Tinker Tailor, really.
