The only reason Tyler is anywhere is because he casts black actors.
Which is fantastic, yes, good for him. He's got the star power to get absolutely fantastic PoC actors onscreen, but his work is consistently dreadful. Ham-fisted writing, all the subtlety of a porno, and humor that appeals or the lowest common denominator. Rarely does an actor give a decent performance in one of his films because the characters are so two dimensional and he just isn't a good director. The potential he might have had with his earlier work has been squandered. His films are cinematic whiplash, a Melrose Place-y drama one second then a circa mid-nineties Eddie Murphy comedy the next. His stage work does not translate well to the screen, plain and simple. Every now and then there's hints of brilliance in a scene that manages to not be terribly written, directed, or cliched, which is why I'm sure he keeps drawing the box office. It's a real shame, the character of Madea could have been so much more.
