Apocalypse easily THE WORST in the series.

This movie was just purely cheesy, full of holes, inconsistencies, and was simply uninteresting.

It also suffered heavily from being a product of the early 2000's.

The first movie at least tried to take itself somewhat seriously. This? Was a joke. I've always liked the RE Franchise, but this this movie is hard to watch.

At least Afterlife had some cool sequences and Retribution had great action scenes. Apocalypse was just dull and too over the top as a Resident Evil film. Too much action. Afterlife and Retribution had the plus of having good pacing and sequencing.

To this day, Apocalypse is still one of the worst movies that I've ever seen in a theater. It's right up there with Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, which is also an abysmal sequel to an okay Paul WS Anderson movie. As bad as he seems, he always manages to pass it off to someone that's worse, though he was still of course heavily involved with the Resident Evil franchise.

Child of the Eighties.
Man of the Nineties.
Man-Child of the Twenty-First Century.

Apocalypse is still better than Retribution

Worst is easily the last chapter due to its terrible editing and poor cinematography. Before that i hesitated between the third one whatever it was call and retribution... Retribution just has no story and feel like a video game but not in a good sense. And not in a way to do justice to the RE games. The clone fest is all over and idiotic.

The third one i just hated it entiraly... they *beep* up the story completely at that point, with no possibility to redeem it. Wesker was a joke, the Tyrant speaking... lol the super power where exeptionally ridiculous.

Honestly the first one is not a bad movie in itself but it just have no link to the resident evil name beside "Umbrella" , thats what bothers me, but its a decent zombie flick. The second one at least TRIED to get closer to the game, even tough it failed in the end because Jill is nothing more than a glorified side kick and Nemesis with emotions ... no thanks lol. Oh and all the names they butchered... Nicolai and Ashford.. ouch. BUT again as a zombie flick it wasn't too bad and at least IN DESIGN the Nemesis looked like the Nemesis...

Alice is the worst character of all time, she need to die in the last movie. Chris/Jill are RE !!!

Dude...I thought The Final Chapter was one of the best in the series hands down. The Final Chapter at least had the plus of being raw, gritty and real compared to the last two outings. Retribution was a complete CGI-fest. The editing was a little fast paced, so what? It felt refreshing and different. Retribution felt too much like Afterlife. It wasn't different enough as a sequel and that was disappointing so it was nice to see The Final Chapter really deviate from the previous ones like it did.

I hated the change of style, it was too raw and gritty to the point it wasn't even pleasant, Alice cutting the hand of Issacs or Alice losing her fingers was too much.

Thank god, I was beginning to think I was the only one of the RE fans (games or movies) that thought that The Final Chapter was the WORST in the film series.

I agree with you for the most part on how I feel about each movie:

-The first one is probably the best in my opinion. I was introduced to the franchise when I saw my cousin playing RE 4 on the gamecube back when I was a kid. After that, he, my father, my brother, and I watched the first two movies back-to-back. This was before Extinction came out, so I was bummed that I had to wait almost 3 years for it. Like you said, the first one is not that bad on it's own, but in my case, the nostalgia factor saves it for me.
-Apocalypse, for similar reasons to the first one, has a special place in my heart, but also, as I've now played a lot more RE games since then, I feel like Apocalypse should be higher ranked among fans, as it's the closest and most faithful to the games. Is it 100% accurate? Hell no, but by adapting the Racoon City storyline as well as having a pretty good looking Nemesis, to this day I'm surprised at how much hate Apocalypse seems to get.
-Extinction was alright, I didn't like how it time-skipped without explaining in more detail what happened between movies, but the Mad Max vibe, Wesker finally making an apperance (though Shawn Roberts would do a much better job than Jason O'Mara), and seeing more jedi action from Alice was pretty neat.
-Afterlife is probably the second best in the series (possibly tying with Apocalypse) due to a fun and hammy Wesker, the soundtrack, the stylized fights scenes, and Chris Redfield fiinally showing up (he's only one of the main characters of the damn series after all). The trailers at this point would be known as falsely advertising how much Wesker would be involved, and how much the cliffhanger endings from the previous movie would effect the next one, but it was still entertaining overall (to be continued).

-Retribution...man, when I first saw this one, I REALLY didn't like it. Claire and Chris were gone, Wesker had even less screentime, Ada and Leon barely spent time together (hell, Leon was less emphasized than Chris, even though Leon shares equal main-character status in the games by now), and there was no story. The fifth movie felt more like a prelude to the final movie. But...after watching the movie again, I remembered it being better than the first time I watched it. Like you, I enjoyed the action scenes, which almost made up for the lack of an actual story.
-The Final Chapter....good God, this is the only one I don't like at all, even after re-watching all the movies again when I marathoned them only recently. This movie had no concept of continuity, the lower budget resulted in sloppy editing and worse graphics, and for a finale, it ended the franchise (which lasted a lot longer than one would expect) on a whimper. Paul Anderson didn't seem to care at this point, though I'm willing to blame Sony for possibly strong-arming Paul into choosing Sir Friendzone from Game of Thrones into having more screen time at the expense of the usually-entertaining Wesker. Not only that, but this one was BORING, not even fun in a campy sense.

I can't believe there are fans who are DEFENDING this movie, let alone saying it was any good or even better than other movies in the series, like are you f**king kidding me? I'll never understand that.
Before my recent marathon, I only liked 3, MAYBE 4 of the Resident Evil movies. Now? I like the first 5 movies, with the sixth one having no redeeming qualities, and I doubt that will change. The first 2 hold a special place for me due to nostalgia; the third was decent, not really all that good but not that bad either; the fourth and fifth had Wesker and other mainstay characters finally making appearances, along with enjoyable set-pieces to make up for the lack of a plot. The sixth....f**k the sixth.

It was subtitled "The Final Chapter" for a reason -- spoiler: they're out of ideas.

Extinction and Retribution are the worst in the series hands down. The only good thing about Retribution is Alice getting het ass beat by Jill. The first 2 movies were good to a certain degree and Afterlife had its good moments and bad. The Final Chapter was too dark and editing cut to *beep* Wtf happened to Chris Leon, Ada, ect. Reboot this shyt!

reply

Retribution has a terrible story but it has the best visuals, budget, best action scenes. and it looks very good on HD tvs.

reply

I think Apocalypse is quite good, not as good as the first movie but still quite decent and hands down the most faithful to the games, it's very similar to Resident Evil 2/Resident Evil 3 games.

Extinction is where they lost the plot and took a bad direction. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I've not yet met anyone in person who considers Apocalypse to be the worst movie.

Most people consider the first two the best, and Afterlife/Retribution usually fight for the crown of 'worst' movie, though I'm hearing a lot of people now say Final Chapter is the worst (I agree).

Considering Apocalypse the worst in the franchise is a valid opinion but it's definitely in the minority.

You have awful taste in movies. I'll give you credit for ranking the first and third films high but you clearly love the video games too much to accurately describe the RE films. I wouldn't trust your opinion worth a crap on the films. Games..maybe, films..no fcking way.

reply

I won't loose any sleep over it. I like the games but I prefer the movies, it's nothing to do with faithfulness to the games.

I'm a disgruntled film and franchise fan, not a disgruntled games fan when it comes to my appraisal of the movies.

I thought Resident Evil: Damnation and Resident Evil: Degeneration were quite bad, and they are based more in the game world.

reply

ripleyclone8, dude, I'd question YOUR taste in movies if you think that Apocalypse is the worst in the series, AND for thinking that The Final Chapter was the best :P

reply

Apocalypse is the best in the series.

reply

Apocalypse is most closer to game (Resident Evil 3: Nemesis).
Afterlife is most pointless.
Retribution is most twisted and crazy.
Extinction and The Final Chapter are best story-driven.
Genesis is the best atmosphere and feeling.

I wouldn't consider any of them good films, though the first is a pretty solid low budget horror film with (IMO) a "Japanese horror" vibe to it and a decent cast.

The others vary, but almost all of them have at least one memorable visual or fun action scene.

The Final Chapter is my least favourite due to the blatant retcons (good on them for trying to at least make sense of Umbrella's motives finally, though), almost non-existent characters and the waste of Wesker. Most of all, though, it's my least favourite because the editing is absolutely TERRIBLE to the point I sometimes couldn't tell what the hell was going on (at best) or had to look away with a sense of nausea (at worst) during the worst of the jumpy, 0.1 second cuts during certain action scenes!

I genuinely pity anyone epileptic who saw this, hell anyone who saw this flashing retinal assault on the big screen should get medical compensation! Please tell me it wasn't shown in 3D too?

reply

Yes,it was in 3d too and it wasn't so bad as you think.

reply

Really? Maybe it's just me, because I can't watch 3D without a headache anyway, and The Hobbit's high frame-rate experiment was something I found utterly uncomfortable to watch. I seriously had to look away from the TV a couple of times during fight scenes in The Final Chapter, hence thinking the big screen would have been an awful experience!

reply

For me wasn't an issue,it's only a matter of how youre eyes can adapt to fast scenes, that's all

reply

I just rewatched the movie on a brighter tv and it was much less horrible an experience. The fast cutting is still IMO a terrible artistic decision but this time I could tell what was going on at least (I had no idea how the toothy BOW was killed the first time!). That said, the BOW fight is still unpleasant to watch, at one point the cuts are so fast the picture strobes! Most other fast fut action scenes I just found slightly confusing, rather than actually visually uncomfortable, so it seems the brighness made a big difference for me.

reply

Apocalypse was the last good film in the series. 3-6 were all pretty bad, but there's still some fun to be found with them as mindless action flicks.
