It’s not subtle or sophisticated, but it’s also not scream-inducingly hilarious. It's obvious and “on the nose”, yet more “smile funny” than “haha funny”. In this way, iit is reminiscent of a second-rate SNL sketch that is mildly amusing for the first minute or two, but then you are like “yeah I get it, let’s move onto the next sketch”. But in Waititi's case it goes on for two hours. If you sit through that much, that is. In the case of “JoJo Rabbit”, I confess that I tapped out after 20 minutes, although I knew it wasn’t going anywhere good much earlier than that.
There's kind of a pretentiousness to it, where you can tell he thinks he's way funnier and more clever than he actually is. Winning an Oscar for writing this meh movie certainly won't help that aspect.
Yeah, I’m pretty confident this would have been the case for me if I stayed with it. The difference between me and janoss above is that I was not expecting it to be funny (I watched it because it was nominated for Best Picture), but I also did not find it very funny.
I've never been able to analyze humor. What you say sounds right to me... I couldn't stand this movie and haven't seen it through to the end.
By way of comparison, how do you feel about The Death of Stalin? I love that and have actually watched it three times.
I get what you are saying about the humour. I didn't find the film especially funny either apart from a few moments, and wasn't overly enthralled by the film after the first 20 minutes but I stuck with it and found it had a better second half, in which the story settled and the more emotional and serious scenes came out. The parts I did laugh at most were in the second half too funnily enough.
It's no masterpiece and not high on laughs but I liked it enough as a fun and touching experience with good performances.
Reminiscent of SNL skits... Hündin please! Okay, to each their/his own is the more dignified response. With that being said, it’s genuinely great (terrific even) to know that soooo many feel the exact opposite of you and other naysayers (the Taika detractors specifically). ;)
Jojo is indeed a superb film, deserving of all the accolades it received. This film, like every other highly regarded film in history (no matter the genre), has its detractors. But the good thing is, it has more fans than not, you know? The brilliant Taika Waititi (that’s right) completely knocked it out of the park. As both a writer and director, he’s always been adept at handling both drama & comedy, but the way he mixed the two in this particular film was not only effective but incredibly impressive (and please spare the “no, this filmmaker I prefer does so and so better” ad nauseam).
Btw, contrary to what reich wingers (they’re everywhere and project so hard) who love to claim certain properties as their own say, by no means was this a pro-reactionary film. Oooh, this was an irreverent film! Our misunderstood Fuhrer was comical (being mocked actually), so obviously the big bad woke people WE chumpflakes get triggered by every second won’t take kindly to it! Yea, and reality says otherwise. Unlike the Todd Phillips’ of the world, luckily Waitit (who laughed at Phillips after he went on his salty+tired boomer/white privileged rant about what’s not acceptable these days) comes from a significantly more forward-thinking place. And I mean, a satirical portrayal of Hitler should’ve been handled with some more subtly? Hmm. Hey, did you find all those times the characters gave each other a ‘Heil Hitler’ repeatedly silly? I’ll admit that was almost SNL-ish, but... guess what? That’s exactly how it happened in real life — Waititi simply showed how ridiculous it all was. So yeah, missed the point as always those pesky “edgy” paranoid reich wing chumps did.
Just saw this for the first time and while I didn't find this film hysterical, I liked it a lot. It's probably a little too zany for some movie goers or to those that like satire. The truth is, it's hard to make war seem funny. lol...
But parts of this film are hilarious and some scenes were just ok. The thing is, I wouldn't even say the best parts are the comedic parts, but rather the more dramatic parts really made me like it. The best scenes of the film are when Elsa and JoJo are looking out the window and watching the city get bombed, and of course the end when they dance together is really touching as well.
There are some magical moments in this movie but again, if you just don't like zany satirical films, you might not like it or if you prefer your satire to be slightly different, it might not satisfy you. That being said, I got to give it an 8.4 out of 10. This is a great film in my view... it reminds me of that movie The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, another film that features kids in the middle of WWII, even though it didn't have the comedic edge this film has, it still hits home as to just how terrible WWII was.
And yeah, it also does remind me of The Death Of Stalin. I would have to say, I enjoyed JoJo R more than both of these movies as well. However, they're worth watching if you liked this one.
