Reason for robberies? Spoilers****

So they robbed banks to pay off the reverse mortgage on the property in order to keep the property so the oil could be given to his kids? Just want to make sure that's right.

You got it.

Yes but it went deeper than that. The bank they robbed was the same bank that gave the mortgage. The bank also purposely gave a mortgage at a rate that they could legally give to Toby's mom but knew she would never pay off. The bank knew the land was valuable and were taking advantage of their mom. Expecting her to not pay it off and then getting all that oil rich land at a small loss of $25,000. To make it worse they even paid any back taxes as a "favor" but in reality it was just another way to ensure it could never be paid off in time.

The best part is that the brothers robbed the bank and then used that stolen money to pay them back. So they paid them back with their own money.

Then to keep anyone off their trail they then had that very same bank manage the trust fund. This kept the bank from looking into the robbery as they wouldn't want to lose that trust. It was in a trust because just in case they were killed or arrested no one could take it away from his kids.

Great write up.

I really enjoyed this film but I couldn't help but question why they Toby didn't just go and get a $40k loan from somewhere (legit or otherwise).

This has been has been asked time and time again and explained time and time again. They couldn’t just go out and get another loan from anyone or borrow from a local ranche.r(they'd be in the same boat, besides the family looks like ones that keep to themselves) no loan shark would even touch Toby and the oil company can't start drilling or touch the land until the land was free and fully belonged to Toby. The bank owned the rights to the land thats the whole point, toby had no other option except to cut his loses and go live with his brother in his trailer.

The movie isn't condoning robbing banks but instead taking a look at how desperate people can get in trouble with banks when desperate times call. A bank is nothing but a business they are in it to make money not you money, so when opportunity came knocking for them to make huge profit on the howards land from oil they gave the mother who was dying a loan they knew she or her sons could never pay back. The lone was one that no one would touch or could touch the boys had no other property etc to obtain another loan. Thats why when toby did pay it back on time the guy who gave the loan was surprised and disappointed.

In response to this quote and bottleshock34, the answer is much simpler. Read my post: Why does NO ONE remember the lawyer saying this?! http://www.imdb.com/rg/e/bt/title/tt2582782/board/flat/263198552?d=263458096#263458096

It's stated by the lawyer in the movie that Chevron WILL NOT drill for oil on the land unless it is DEBT FREE. That means they can not owe ANYONE money. They HAD to pay it off in a way that no one else but them owned any part of it. That means no bank loans, no borrowing, no nothing.
