Hell or High Water comes out of nowhere and presents itself as a contender for the year’s best, bringing with it a trio of tremendous lead performances. Seeing how “good” people react when they’re backed into a corner and their livelihoods threatened isn’t exactly a new concept — especially not over the past decade — but Hell or High Water has the smarts to implant that concept into the most American genre of film there is.
