The break up analogy would have worked better... (Spoilers)

If Zack had been the one to break up with Beth before she died. The fact that she broke up with him, then dies, then he remains obsessed, then she returns and returns his obsession, then he wants her to remain dead makes the entire thing confused.

The director states that the entire thing is an analogy for a break up, forgetting the things you dislike about your ex and only remembering the good, trying to get back together and remembering that theres a reason to let those things die. This makes more sense if Zack has rose colored glasses about his relationship with Beth once she has died, forgetting the reasons they broke up to begind with, then remembering once shes back as a zombie.

Your point makes sense to me, even though I haven't seen this movie yet. But I'm still going to, though.

I thought they were just "having problems" right before she died, not really being broken up yet?

As for the point you and the director make, I think it makes total sense.

I could have sworn that in early stuff I read about the movie, Zach was the one to break up with Beth. That's why I was so confused during the movie.

You heart me? What is that? Is that like I love you for pussies?

My take is that it doesn't much matter who finally cut the rope - it had clearly been fraying for some time. True, some break ups just blind side one party, but more often than not both are aware that things just aren't working. That's what I got from Zack's early statements - that they were having difficulties. It was a two way street.

I also think the metaphor goes beyond just a break up to people being in denial and refusing to deal with their issues, whether it is staying in a failed relationship, or not admitting that your daughter is dead.
