at the scene while the older woman offered the seeds, survivalist looked at the package - kings, then threw it on the ground and repelled them with his shotgun.

why?

Exactly.
The big farming community represents the new Kings Castle.
The survivalist was an outcast. A thief who would be removed from society.
The old crone also. She was a pure irish as her name kath erin means.
