Those guys that attack him
were they the same ones that came during the night last time and mess up his farm?
shareMost likely which is one of my biggest problems with the movie. The character was portrayed as smart and cautious for the entire movie but doesn't think the people who came during the night to raid his camp would come back?
My other problem problem was that he supposedly had this really well hidden camp. He even remarks to the mother and daughter when they first arrived about it, but then in a relatively short time period he had the women, the man with the pistol, and the raiders all stumble upon his camp.
I enjoyed the movie, but those two things seemed like writing issues that could have easily been sorted out.
also there was no plan that swung into effect when they the 'alarm' of the cans... it's like there was no preparation at all for the inevitable invasion

With regards to how well hidden the camp is, I don't see your point. The man with the gun could well have been one of the raiders, scouting the area for all we know. Also, the film spans several months, so two or three groups finding the camp in many months is a fairly well hidden camp.
What preperations could he have made that would have helped?
He could have either set some traps or moved locations. He was fine with moving locations so long as they took their seeds when they arrived. He could have taken his crops and the seeds and moved before hand and just replanted them elsewhere. Instead he waited for a team of 6 people that had already found his camp once to return only to run then?

and its so well hidden and away from civilization that a scout and then a party all happened across his location? I don't think so. We don't know where the movie is set but most of the characters had North American accents. To think of how much land is available and and this being a post apocalyptic time when much of the population has died off its safe to assume that the camp cant be that well hidden if in a matter of months he's had that many intruders. Yet its well enough hidden that the rest of the 7 years he's spent there on his own he's been able to survive unscathed, again there could have been something written in to improve this part of the film.
There's also the fact that he's been out there for 7 years and apparently never once thought of catching or learning how to catch any animals because there aren't any, yet a bunny comes across their trap pretty easily once the woman set it. I don't care where you are there's always birds, snakes, rats etc in a forest yet he didn't know after 7 years how or where to find these things. okay, but lets say all the animals died out because of the post apocalyptic element, then what the heck is the bunny doing there? If there's a bunny there then there are larger and smaller animals around as well.
I know I'm complaining a lot which makes it seem like I didn't enjoy the movie when in fact I actually really did enjoy it, and given the small budget I thought it was a really well done film. Perfect example of how to make a movie on a budget, but these small issues are just little things that if they'd just writing something in or thought out a little better would have taken this movie to a higher level.

i did not enjoy it nearly as much as you did, but some of those elemements bothered me as well.

true. he supposedly survived 7 years and yet did not find a way to effectively defend his house? no booby traps for example. why? also in 7 years with all the natural sources around him, he never found the time or will to develop a bow or even a way to manufacture his own metal bullets and shooting device? instead he relied on his last shotgun bullets. wtf?

yeah, that was very annoying. also (SPOILER!) if there are animals, 1) why go almost full vegan and 2) there was no need for the predators to become cannibals. also, he killed people anyways, but the thought of cannibalism did never cross his mind?
one thing in that context is, that the predators found his house and instead of taking over the house and crops, they leave and destroy his crops. how does that make sense. even worse (SPOILER!), when they finally catch him, instead of using that shelter as a second or possibly third base and use his crops, they burn it all down. i understand that eating him will be enough for 6 people, but why destroy the veggie food?

I agree they should have left it as the veggies would self seed and they could come now and again to harvest vegetables without expending any effort growing them.
And secondly they should have eaten the guy he shot first as he was dead. Then they should eat him or the one in the trap as they would still be fresh. share

alternatively: flee, hide, go stealth mode and kill them one by one
yup. that and the fact that even though he was so well prepared, he had no idea how to booby trap the area around his house? wtf?
shareActually, the old woman addressed this. Saying it's not that well hidden, because she and her "daughter" found it. Also that he was just mostly "lucky" up until now.
shareMaybe it's not that well hidden... at the beggining we see him burrying a man and there are also some other graves near. So why speculate that it is so well hidden?
