When he allowed his humanity to cloud his survival instincts. He allowed himself to be lulled into a sense of security after he opened his home and heart for the women. It was foolish to not realize that either the mother/daughter would try to kill him- even if they had not did he think they would just go away, and not tell anyone of his existence. It was also foolish to think the men that raided his farm would not come back again. They should have left and moved away to safety and started new.
At least he found redemption for allowing the girl to escape.

I kind of felt like that was the point though. He had been living there for a very long time and obviously was lonely to the point of losing touch with everything. In the end his small amount of humanity killed him but he kind of found redemption through it.

However, your point is spot on about the six guys coming back. My thought was they would at least try and add some defenses to the place. Of course this isn't the predator and outside of their single trap I'm not sure how much they had to work with.

Another point though is why didn't the guys just burn down the place the first time, like they did the second?
