Alice and her mother

While I found this movie solidly mediocre and Depp downright awful, I felt it had three great strengths: the visuals, Time and Alice's relationship with her mother. I found the depiction of a positive and mutually supportive mother/daughter relationship extremely refreshing and admirable, historical accuracy be damned. It's so rare to see mothers depicted as something other than blandly loving/shrewish/nagging in fantasy cinema, so I found it very welcome indeed that Alice's mother ultimately turned out to help liberate her daughter rather than restrain her. We need more movies with themes like that.

Agreed. In the first film, her mother gives her a necklace and tells Alice that she is beautiful. She does complain a little bit that Alice isn't wearing the proper undergarments, but overall she seems like a good mother.
