THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS WILL LOSE 65MIL

According to The Hollywood Reporter. Despite some fans saying that it wasn't a bomb, it was a bomb.

Disney's Alice Through the Looking Glass also bombed. The sequel cost an estimated $170 million to make but topped out at $295.4 million worldwide, meaning a loss of at least $65 million for the studio.

Of course it was a bomb. Only $300M on a $170M budget? That's a bomb.

reply

well it's a bit higher than 170 as that doesn't include marketing, and overseas figures tend to be halfed as they take a bigger percentage. So i'm told.

I suspect in reality it did make a loss but not as big as it's been reported.
Plus, the first film made enough for both of them, so i doubt Disney is weeping.

Yes that's a bomb. The studios only get back about 53% of the domestic box office. Overseas is even less than that with China going as low as 25%. So $300M would get back less than $150M. I thought the loss would be more like $20 to $30 million but Alice's box office was so foreign heavy that $65 million seems very likely assuming a 40% average take from the foreign box office.

Bullshit they're all calling it a success. And years later it's still making more all the time.
