No nothing about the gay guys, there was something else...

The whole scene was filled with little things to indicate that the priest was the killer.

when they first stopped the car, there was a poster of him and an huge arrow
pointing from a mask to his picture. "Capt. Obvious"
Shortly before blacky said to go down to whitey you can see a "1946".
And finally after whitey is killed you'll see a huge "LEGACY" made out of signs.

What was the purpose? False lead?

It served as a red herring. There were other messages throughout the junkyard as well, such as "Dead", "Phase 2", "Remember", "Atone" and "Phantom".

There was also an Olive Garden sign.
