West Virginia is not the South...
...Just thought I'd point that out. If WV is the South, so is Maryland and you will get chuckles from folks in places like Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina if they heard you say so.

shareMaryland is the south though.... In Technical terms.

i live in virginia. no way in heck maryland is the south, even northern virginia isnt "southern"
shareIt's technically a Southern state, like where it's located in terms of the Mason - Dixon line. And there are parts of Maryland and West Virginia that can seem very stereotypically "southern".

I thought anything below the Mason-Dixon Line is the South?
I'm feeling rough, I'm feeling raw, I'm in the prime of my life.
it is... theres different "souths" deep south dirty south new south... just depends on who you talk to
shareAs far as the Census is concerned, Maryland and West Virginia are the South. But in socio-cultural terms, which is actually what makes something "Southern," they are not. In fact, MD and WV have far more in common with places like Ohio and Pennsylvania than they do with even with places like North Carolina and Virginia, states that have become "Northernized" over the past few decades.

I'm from Northern Virginia and while I dont consider myself southern, Virginia is technically the South, as well as Maryland because of the Mason-Dixon line.
I wouldnt consider the people on this show 'Southern'; I'd consider them 'Country'
what you consider yourself is irrelevant. It's a southern as far as geography is concerned. I can consider myself an American but I'm still a European.
shareCT here, no northern states have been mentioned in this thread.....

ummm, West Virginia is not the South at all. In 1861 the northwestern counties of Virginia broke away from Virginia to form their own State to stay within the Union and fought on the Union side against the Confederate States, with distinction. West Virginia in 1863 set up a system of free public education, like the other northern States, with nearly equal education for black children as for white, which was unusual for the time.
