Not to sound like an arse, but I was thinking that yesterday, too. Some hooptie on the highway was tailgating me, and when I got over to let them pass, it had to have been the most overweight, trashy looking woman ever with her window cracked, trying to puff out the smoke without letting out the heat.
But that got me thinking, you generally don't see educated/well-off people smoking.
Them smoking is what makes for a good candidate for the show.

I agree with junebugkb. I smoke cigarettes, but I smoke outside, in my own privacy. I brush my teeth every night and day, I shower every day and I wear cologne. I never smell like smoke. I even ask people. I actually have a high IQ, I'm well educated and I'm far from "trash". I work a full time job, and a part time job and I'm a college student.
The fact of the matter is, it isn't right to judge a book by it's cover. I'm not condoning it, because it is a nasty habit. Don't pick up the habit because you think it's cool, or because you're curious.

-Oh if only it were that easy for us non-smokers. What about the second hand smoke coming from the person you work with all day every day? Or the person 1 table away from you eating outside so your food tastes like butt? Or the person standing near the doorway smoking even though they're supposed to be X amount of feet away. Or the person next to you in line who REEKS of ciggs so hard you can actually taste their stench. Or the old man driving in front of you on a 1 way road with a constantly burning cigarette?
Every time I'm near one my eyes start watering, my mouth goes dry, food doesn't taste right, etc. So imagine EVERY time you're near someone smoking a cigarette you essentially have an allergy attack? So no, it's not as simple as the usual 'if you don't like cigarettes don't smoke' bull crap smokers come up with to defend their nasty ass habit.
Seriously, name another habit that is as stinky and disgusting to those around you, yet so commonly defended as cigarettes. Would you defend someone who never showers and stinks to high-heaven on purpose because it's 'their right to do so' and they're 'not hurting anyone but themselves'?

It's actually not that hard to avoid second hand smoke today.. I remember like 12 years ago people could light up a cigarette in a restaurant. Obviously they got rid of the option to do that. I don't condone to smoking in public places. I only smoke at my home, sometimes in my car but only when I'm driving so the smoke can easily get out of the window. What's wrong with that? Of course there are always going to be people who just don't care about who they are affecting with second hand smoke and will do it right in front of a building or something. My local movie theater is full of teenagers who just hang out in front of the building with all their friends and smoke, probably thinking it makes them look cool and mature. All you can really do is roll your eyes at them. But again many states have laws that forbid smoking within a certain amount of range. Hotels are even cracking down and getting rid of smoking rooms. So there's not really much to complain about for non smokers. You can't get rid of cigarettes altogether. They're always going to be around. It IS a free country. selling tobacco products generates a lot of revenue and a lot of money goes into the account of the government by imposition of taxes on this revenue. By applying a complete ban on it will result in a huge amount of loss for the government.

-Yeah smokers love the 'it's not THAT hard to get away from' line. Truth is it's not just the 5 mins of actual cig smoking that can get to ya. It's the smoke from 10 feet away that's drifting right into your face. It's the permeating smell from someone who just smoked in an enclosed space. It's the butts still burning in the gutter that you can smell while you wait for someone.

-And right on cue! Didn't I mention this would be said by some smoker? Again, name another habit that is as stench filled to those around you as cigs and defended with 'it's my right'. Yeah, technically there's no law against farting on someone's food or burping in someone's face either. It's anyone's right to do it, yet nobody does because of the concept of decency towards those around you. For some reason when it comes to ciggs that all goes out the window.

-Yeah my town spends over ELEVEN MILLION dollars a year on cigarette butt removal from the streets. How many other towns do the same? What about that cost, is it included in your assessment of losses? Also:

No one is born with a cigarette in their mouth or craving one, unless their idiot mother decided it would be a good idea to smoke while pregnant. People are born homosexual, so going against that is discrimination and stupid. Discriminating against someone for something incredibly stupid they are choosing to do is different.
People choose to smoke, knowing it is expensive and will kill them. You see people on government assistance still buying cigarettes, like insolent gits, and complaining about not having enough money. Smoke is a terrible smell (almost as bad as alcohol) and no one wants to smell it. You may think because you smoked outdoors or a few hours ago that the smell is gone, but it isn't. Smokers also don't understand that they shouldn't just flick their cigarette butts onto the ground or on sidewalks.
Even worse are the petulant parents with children who still smoke in the house, oblivious or just uncaring to the fact that it is greatly affecting the children. Smokers are right up there with people who drink alcohol in their insolence and should not be tolerated. They even want insurance to cover their medical care when they get sick.

shareSmoking has nothing to do with intelligence level. Most smokers start while teenagers and peer pressure is involved. Smokers are also from all walks of life, movie stars, scientists, gas station clerks, teachers, doctors, etc. All walks of life.
I use to smoke. I smoked for 20+ years. I tried everything to quit and nothing worked. The gum and patches don't work. People swear by the pills but they also make people nuts. For me, I couldnt' quit until I tried electronic cigarettes. I no longer smoke and now I vape. Vaping gives you the nicotine you are addicted to without the cancer causing tar, the yellow teeth and fingers, the stinky clothes and hair, and without having to deal with ash, ashtrays, and cigarette butts. It's wonderful.

Incorrect. It is not atrue statement. People don't smoke because they are stupid. As I mentioned prior, people begin to smoke at a relatively early age, usualy in their teens. Peer pressure is a main motivation for taking up smoking. If all of one's friends smoke then there will be considerable pressure, even if only on an unconcious level, for a person to smoke as well.
Right now, any smoker needs to transition to e-cigs. They are wonderful. You still get the nicotine you crave but without the cancer-causing tar, the stinky clothes, hair, and breath, etc. It's wonderful and you can do it practically everywhere.
