Anyone else weirded out by Yogi and Darby's relationship?

Yogi looks like he's about 12 and Darby looks like shes 17. I dunno i just find it weird Disney's ok with showing someone who looks like a small child with a 17 year old girl in a romantic relationship.

What was even weirder was when they was at the ski lodge Yogi was trying to follow her to her room until Josh stopped him. So was we to assume that little kid was gonna sleep with that near adult female?

Also i just looked it up and the actress who plays Darby is 17 and the actor who plays Yogi is 13, so there you go. And i think their characters are supposed to be 13 and 16, so even in the show for their characters theres still a big age gap between them, the same age gap they make a big deal about over Maya and Josh.

Thats what i love about these high school girls, i get older they stay the same age.

There shouldn't be that much of an age gap in the characters. They are both in the same grade.

The only exception would be if Darby was held back like Lucas, Yogi skipped a grade, and they were born on opposite ends of the school calendar. I doubt this was the case though.

It's just the writers' way of taking what they wanted to be short-term comedy into long-term stupidity. Much like the name Farkle. As Zay asked: "Who would do that to you?" The answer is the writers, as one probably called out during a meeting: "Wouldn't it be funny if this kid was named Farkle??"

But that is Disney for you.

Theres a wiki for Girl Meets World and it has the ages for every character on there and it says Yogi's is 13 and she is 16.

Yes, with the disclaimer that "Girl Meets World Wiki is a community site that anyone can contribute to." I can go in and change both of their ages to 24 if I wanted to.

It's not like the writers make the Wiki site. Whoever came up with those probably looked at the actors' ages with nothing else to really go on.

EDIT: In fact, the site that I'm on says that both of them are 14 years old.

Well it doesn't change the fact that irl shes 17 and he's 13, so regardless of the characters age you can clearly tell how much older she is than him, whether they wanna say shes 14 and he's 13 or not.

I mean it wouldn't be anything if they just made it like she looks at him like a cute puppy and nothing more, but they actually present them as a couple, even showing him trying to sneak into her room with her. It just looks wrong, i mean girls already mature faster than boys, but then to get a girl whos 4 years older than a boy whos only 13, you're gonna see a drastic difference in age.

Their actual ages are still irrelevant. Rowan and Peyton are about the same difference in age, but she converged right on his lips two years ago. Trina McGee is also ten years older than Rider Strong. I know they were both old enough, but the fact that they're representing different ages is what I'm referring to. Sydney Bennett (Desiree) was also only 14/15 years old when she was boasting her cleavage and pressed up against Will Friedle, kissing him for a long few seconds.

I just don't know what the argument is here. Look, I'm not for the relationship because I think it came off as a wacky joke when introduced and the writers put themselves in a corner with it. The last thing I have issue with though is that the actors' ages dictate the characters' ages or motivations. Boy Meets World was full of things that characters did or were inferred to end up doing when underage. Remember when Shawn came out of the make-out closet in a different shirt? That's just one of several things.

Yeah but the difference in Yogi and Darby's relationship than the examples you gave is Yogi looks like a child and Darby looks like a 17 year old. In none of the examples you gave did one look way older than the other. Peyton and Rowan can easily pass for exact same age.

If the actors are older than one another but can pass for the same age its fine, but when you got a girl whos CLEARLY years older and the other is practically still 12 it looks odd.

I mean if they casted a 40 year old for a character thats 15 and was dating a girl whos 12 irl but 15 on the show wouldn't that look a little odd? Thats all i'm saying, just because the characters are supposedly close in age doesn't mean you should just ignore the fact that one is clearly too old to be dating the other.

They are a comedic couple. It's a well used trope to portray the 'funny couple' as being physically funny as well as acting funny. Part and parcel of this physical humor is the use of concepts such as tall/small, fat/thin. Darby is tall, Yogi is short. It's a physical punchline. And it's one that they play up to the best of their abilities.

The show spares no chance to have Yogi sit on Darby's lap--again, physical humor. Not only is it funny because he looks like a child sitting on an adult's lap, but it's funny because it subverts the standard action of the girlfriend sitting on her boyfriend's lap.

In fact, Yogi's small size seems to be a driving influence in Darby's desire for him (which opens up a Pandora's Box of issues...). Note her borderline obsession with wanting to carry him like a doll. I hesitate to use the word "kinky", but Darby is certainly getting something out of their relationship that is directly linked their difference in height.

Also in line with their comedic portrayal, they were the first successful couple on the show. Before Maya and Josh, before Riley and Lucas, before Farkle and Smackle, there was Darby and Yogi. Also, if "Ski Lodge Part 1" shows us anything, they can't seem to keep their hands off of each other!

I still can't believe that they showed Yogi trying to sneak into Darby's room. Woah, hold your horse there, Disney Channel!

In the end, their relationship is supposed to be seen as both weird and sweet. And I would say that it's done both--despite being a long term story line for background extras! Can't say that I've seen that much over the years...

See the part you said about her carrying him around like a doll, thats how i think they should be seen. Darby should just look at him like a cute puppy or a doll that she can carry around and pinch his cheek or whatever. I don't know why they have to be in a relationship, he could just be like her cute little buddy she likes.

Have middle school/early high school kids changed so much since I went that there's not the dramatic difference in physical maturity rates between individuals? The Yoby thing is a comedic extreme demonstration of that.

I remember when I was a high school freshman, there were guys whose voices hadn't started changing yet, and girls who had figures like fence posts. By senior year, they had caught up with the rest of the kids. I remember one particular girl who went through 4 or 5 bra sizes in one year. There were a few guys who went from Yogi size to Thor size during the 4 years.

It works the other way around, too. Some look older than they are.

When I was in college I was part of a team of students who worked in camps during the summers as volunteer counselors. We also served as unofficial recruiters for the college. (Usually we worked with high school age kids, but some weeks with younger kids too.) Other colleges had teams like ours and it always was interesting meeting the students from other schools. At one camp there was an absolutely gorgeous girl whom we assumed was a freshman or sophomore from another college. Her face, figure, hair and complexion were perfect and would have been the envy of many nineteen or twenty year old girls. But she actually was one of the campers, and had turned twelve just a couple of weeks before coming to camp. Her real age became obvious the moment you began talking with her; in spite of the way she looked, she had the personality and innocence of a sweet little girl. She immediately became everyone's little sister and we watched over her very carefully to be sure none of the boys tried to take advantage of her. (Being twelve or thirteen themselves, most were too intimidated by her looks to do more than gawk and stammer awkwardly when they tried to talk to her. She seemed completely unaware of the effect she had on boys, which made us all even more protective of her.)

Hey, I once had a girlfriend who was much taller than me when I was a kid... and she was a year and a half younger.

I met her years later, and I found out I'm taller now.

reply

It just looks really odd, especially since he hops in her lap all the time looking like her kid brother, then tries to follow her into her room to fool around with her.

The actress is seriously almost 18 and the boy is like 13 irl, i mean thats a pretty huge difference. Its not like shes just really tall, he's the size of a kid and shes the size of an adult practically, they both look about how they should.

It is the age of the characters that matter not the actors. It isn't as if the actors have had to do anything with one another. They are in the same grade, most likely the same age. I don't think it matters. I remember a lot of boys being a lot shorter then the girls for a long time before they shot up. Most girls quit growing by 8th grade whereas a lot of boys haven't hit their big growth spurt yet. It happens.

I don't care for it either.
