That's the general problem for sitcoms, in my opinion. You can tell they've gone on too long when they either regress into silliness, or get overly sentimental and lose the comedy.

reply

It happened way quicker with this show than it did with its predecessor or with other sitcoms, though.

That was the case from the very first episode of this series. They didn't build to and/or earn sentimentality like most shows do. They had it in the first five minutes and since it wasn't earned it was schmaltzy.

I don't think it was necessarily cancelled but it does appear to have ended because they have said nothing. I believe the show was planned for these three seasons and they knee it all along. The episode sweet sixteen shows that there is a time jump and MJ said a time jump was planned. The next episode is a thank you to fans. I think they knew it was ending and couldn't say anything until this next episode airs

reply

no this was def supposed to be a 4 season show but probably by s3 disney was done with it because ratings were tanking (partly cuz of writing and party cuz of disney's terrible scheduling)

reply

Sad, this show was a huge waste of potential. Hopefully they can resurrect it on Netflix or something where they can focus on the adult characters as well like Fuller House.

reply

Normally I'd tell people to not hold their breathe, but I'm telling you to do the opposite, so hold your breathe

If it was a flop on the Disney, why would Netflix want it? Rider doesn't want to act regularly and the Matthews are neither funny or interesting.

"Maybe Auggie Ava?"

I would rather watch a video of myself being skinned alive. Those two kids are flat out awful.

Thanks for the laugh and visual. I hear ya on not wanting those twits with a show of their own.

Actually, it's the network's #1 live action show, followed by Liv and Maddie - and they got a short 4th season....

reply

If it were doing as well as expected, it would have been renewed. AFAIK, the general consensus is it's not very good and the ratings are tanking.

Ratings are down for all Disney shows and GMW is still #1

reply

That's because Disney is pure garbage and is only successful when purchasing and using another's intellectual property. GMW is a perfect example of that doesn't even always work.

I don't see that happening. Netflix is already streaming older episodes of Girl Meets World, I believe. It would take an act of God for them to even consider continuation at this point, as low as the ratings currently stand on a cable network station.

If Girl Meets World is being concluded, then I'm content with Disney's decision. It contained annoying characters that pandered to the tween crowd. The supposed "love triangle" would just not go away, and, the show's focus started to shift towards Maya.

Disney ignored what made Boy Meets World (1993) great to begin with. Even the cameo appearances didn't help in the long run.

They really should have taken a page out of Netflix's Fuller House (2016) series. With only 13 episodes per season, people prefer quality over quantity. I can see why it was renewed shortly after the second season premiered. It'll probably run as long as the original series did.

But, hey, Freeform's still an option for this show.

reply

Fuller House is successful because

1. It isn't on network tv and doesn't have to deal with scheduling issues

2. It knows that people mostly watch it ironically and doesn't take itself seriously. Even though it isn't a good show I can easily watch it because at least it's fun to laugh at the terrible dialogue, whereas GMW is poorly written AND a chore to watch due to how over dramatic/preachy it is

Also I've been seeing "freeform" on here since even before this show's pilot aired. Not only will it never go to freeform or netflix but neither of those outlets will fix the show's main issue, which is awful awful awful writing

reply

The writing is awful but the characters are just as bad. They made everyone from the original series retarded. Not a single one of them acts like an actual adult. The kids are super unrealistic and completely unlikable. The only one with any depth or that is played by a kid with Talent is Maya who is just a one trick pony and a complete rip off of Shawn. Zay is alright but never gets enough time to do much and is always shoe horned with weaker characters. Auggie and Ava are flat out terrible. Not a single redeeming thing about either of them. I mostly FF when they're on but if I ever get stuck watching one of their scenes it makes me want to blow my brains out.

reply

At that age level, Augie and Ava are two of the best in the business and on this show. They should definitely have a show of their own.

reply

No one that at that age level should have their own show because it will be utter garbage made for the sole purpose of making money off of kids who don't know anything about the quality of entertainment. BMW wasn't brilliant by any means but there was enough quality and character there to keep it going and keep it a cult classic for years to come. Nothing about this show, especially those two annoying children will ever come even close to that because everything about it is flat our poorly done.

reply

I think that part of the reason that the writing is bad is because of how they are limited of the type of material that they can use because of being on Disney. Fuller House has an unlimited amount of material that they can use because of being on Netflix, and they would've suffered the same fate if they had come back to network tv.

reply

Disney bought ABC [which is the channel Boy Meets World was on] so...saying the show being on Disney and having limited "storylines" cannot be blamed. I blame rowan blanchard's acting as well as her twitting out messages with controversial topics that shouldn't have been discussed by someone her age.

She's stupid even for a child.

reply

Wow, you must be a mind reader. That's exactly what I was thinking, LOL!

I sorta agree about the characters. They really dumbed-down Cory to an immature preteen in an adult body. This worked in Boy Meets World (1993) because he actually was a tween/teenager at the time.

He should have been another Mr. Feeny. Cory always wanted to be modeled after him. I can understand him being a little awkward from time to time because of his personality, but Disney and the writers went really overboard. He matured by the series finale of Boy Meets World if you remember the departing speech between him and Feeny.

I'd never believe in a million years that Riley is their daughter. I can't say much about Auggie since he's only a child. Maya is, what you have stated above, another Shawn Hunter. I believe that was their intention, though, they focus on her way too much. It's like Disney and Michael Jacobs forgot the main plot of their own show.

Lucas is supposed to be a love interest for Riley. Honestly? Once their relationship became official, it's like they dropped the ball on that one. They hardly look like a couple. They don't even express an interest in each other like normal teenagers in love.

Ava was insufferable for the first two seasons, but they actually managed to fix her character. Even she matured herself.

Dewey (DOY) is like nails on a chalkboard. I absolutely must skip his scenes. The joke has been played out. There's nothing remotely funny about a kid that can't pronounce his own name. He must have the crappiest parents in the world. Get this kid to a damn speech therapist stat!

Farkle was another unlikable character, but once he ditched those turtleneck shirts and stopped saying that "HAAAAA!!!" crap every single episode, then he started to become likeable.

Zay is just kinda...there. He's like the fifth wheel of the group. Sometimes he'll disappear with no explanation. Though, this was a theme in Boy Meets World when Minkus vanished.

Topanga is fine. She has always been a little on the nutty side. She's probably the most tolerable character in his piss-poor excuse of a sequel.

A lot of the characters in this series are pretty much forgettable, wherein Boy Meets World actually made you care and remember. The real-world events that took place reminded you of how life was like in actuality.

I can't say the same about Girl Meets World. True, some of the events that they encounter do happen on the outside, but they also go overboard on some of the issues.

And, finally, the intro? Good God. You can tell that they really really want the original fan base to tune in. I want to gag every single time I see it. I do like the actual theme song, though.

Maybe it has something to do with the Boy Meets World audience being adults now and watching a show that's mainly aimed at a younger generation on a kid's network. I don't know anybody that acts like a Cory, unless they're certifiably insane.

I suppose Rowan Blanchard can be partially blamed as well since she's trying to incorporate some of her political grandstanding that doesn't belong in a show such as this.

What a shame. This idea should have been pitched to a streaming service like Netflix, unless there were copyright and distribution issues. There's no flexibility in the writing, and there's severe limitations on what can be said and done on a station such as Disney.

Maybe they can pull a Community (2009). NBC sold the rights to Yahoo! and produced a sixth season. Sure, the quality was diminished, but it actually turned out better than the dreaded fourth season on a regular network station.

Edit: Though, the more I think about it, they'll lose Sabrina Carpenter since she has an obligation to Disney. She probably wouldn't follow. If that's the case, then they'd probably have to retool the show, call it "Man Meets World", and focus on Cory's character again. I don't see that happening.

Of course, there's a buttload of other problems, such as airing episodes out of order, taking long, unnecessary breaks, and having more than your standard 22 episodes per season. They really hurt themselves if you want to look at it that way.

If they fixed the above, then this show could have potentially ran as long as the original. Unfortunately, that's not the case. They really screwed the pooch on what could have been a hit series.

Now, it'll be looked upon as one of those "WTF were they thinking?" type of shows. I'm honestly glad they never sold any DVDs or Blu-rays. To me, a lot of the episodes do not hold any desire to be re-watched. I don't even keep it on my DVR anymore.

I apologize for the long rant. I just needed to say a few things that were on my mind about Girl Meets World.

reply

I agree with literally everything you said. The Topanga thing too is especially funny because they've done the best job keeping her character intact yet she gets the least screen time and is usually stuck to Auggie's awful storylines. I would like a reboot series about the Mathhews family that completely ignores this series and retools it making a real sequel to BMW and is a continuation of the original series. That will never happen though for multiple reasons. There's a few episodes I would watch again but all of them feature the original cast members and I only enjoyed them because of the OG cast. This show has been a complete failure and is a perfect example of wasted potential. Look at Fuller House. Is it a great show? No, but it does what it's trying to do well and is at least entertaining and slightly believable. I would take BMW over Full House any day of the week but as for the follow ups Fuller House is what GMW wishes it could've been and completely destroys it's competition.

Since Rider did a lot of directing of GMW along with Ben they are most likely know about the cancellation. They definitely got the word from Michael Jacobs.

reply

Can't say I am surprised this was a decent idea (remake BMW focusing on the child of the beloved Cory and Topanga) gone horribly wrong. This show was billed one way and ended up being something entirely different. Worst of all it was a colossal failure at being a children's program on Disney channel. I kept asking what 5-13 year old wants to watch a 30+ year old man lecture for 10 minutes per episode? Season 1 and half of season 2 were watchable the rest was a mess. Good riddance.

Edited to add: there has been no official cancellation so this clunker could still get another season. My opinion still stands either way.

yes it can When Disney showed boy meets world they heavily edited a lot of the episodes. a lot of shows on abc had content that would have never been shown on Disney channel.

Right, except when Ethan Suplee's character Frankie Stecchino was hinted about being gay in Back 2 School (1994), it actually slipped by the censors. Either that or, it aired at a time when Disney wasn't too overly sensitive about certain subjects.

Here's a clip if it in case you're wondering: https://youtu.be/Zb-hsCTgJ6E

It even has the logo in the bottom left hand corner from somewhere between 2002 - 2010.

This would NEVER fly nowadays. The LBGTQ community would be in a uproar if Disney ever aired that episode again this day and age in reruns.
