Could it do it? Could Arrival win Best Picture?
Well?
What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.

I don't think so. It could get nominated, but there are a lot of other films with subjects that appeal to the academy like Fences, Moonlight, Jackie and maybe la la land.
shareThere's Oscar buzz around Hacksaw Ridge!
politicidal,
at this point it's highly unlikely it will merit Oscar consideration. If you believe in projections, Arrival is borderline in every category. Initially it seemed Adams was a shoo-in however enthusiam has somewhat been muted toward her performance - with it being supplanted by Portman as Jackie Kennedy and Benning in 20th Century Women.
with the academy's general disdain for science fiction, this might just be crowdpleasing fare- yes its been praised as being a thinking woman's attempt to understand the world she lives in-if one strips away the scientific theory used in the film re:language and communication, its simply a tale of a mother recalling the life of her child and the man who fathered her.
Still a long way til noms are announced - it could land a Best Picture nom losing to Fences or LaLaLand or even something like Loving which is relevant to current issues

Hi Annie
Whilst I do agree that Arrival may well miss out on nominations, I have been watching the reviews and comments coming in from the start and I would say that enthusiasm for the film is increasing not decreasing. Sasha Stone is a top awards pundit and she discusses this exact question in the link below.

This is her summing up in relation to the dominance of older men in the voting process.
When I watch Arrival now, knowing what’s coming, I start to cry immediately and then never really stop. I understand that much of this is personal. I do get that the feelings that swirl around in my addled brain are unlike the feelings of 4,000 middle-aged men. I get that. But when I see this exceptional, unique film where every shot is a work of art, and for once there is a woman who is capable and brilliant and the true heroine — I just think “Wow!” You can try to make me stop predicting Arrival by saying “they” will never go for it. You can try, but it’s one of those things I will ride out until the bitter end because it’s just that good.
sal42,
hey how are you?

I won't divulge the plot,.. but your take on it is wrong, it's much much more profound than a mother's loss, and anyone whom honestly thinks that, just isn't deserving of thoughtful cinema and deserves nothing but a constant diet of Transformers movies.
I do agree that the establishment doesn't think highly of science fiction, specially when there's an academy staple on hand,.. Them old folks do love their sing and dance numbers. Lala Land is all but a (tappity tap tap) shoe in.
bikesloth,
yes I work at the studio that released Transformers which a lot of people enjoy. I have a deep appreciation for such films as Unforgiven/Dear Frankie/Yol/Dark Victory/Gladiator/Schindler's List/LA Confidential/Vigil/Careful He Might Hear You/A Beautiful Mind/The Insider/Kill the Messenger as well as being entertained by Gerard Butler's Fallen franchise/Avengers/Dr Strange anything by Chris Nolan among others,
No need to divulge the plot as I have read the short story upon which it is based (Story of your life -your life refers to her daughter)and the theory put forth : Fermat's Principle of Least Time/Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis is the basis used as the reason for HOW the tale is told. Thw film version has added the standard subplots which makes it easier for most people to understand.
Whether Arrival achieves 2001/Contact status remains to be seen. With the new influx of women into the Academy, perhaps Adams will snag a best Actress nom but based on what I have seen/read and heard she is on the border for consideration as there has been considerable push for Portman as Jackie Kennedy/Benning in 20th Century Women

Having just seen it, I really hope so. Best film of the year. No contest!
Sadly, the Oscars are not kind to SciFi but I hope it at least gets a few nominations!
