Thinking we're alone in the universe is dumber than "the earth is flat"

200 years from now the millennials are going to be remembered as the dumbest generation in human history because they had so much information and technology at their disposal but STILL had the asinine belief that humans are the only intelligent species in a possibly infinite universe. It's mind boggling. There are literally trillions of planets hospitable to carbon based life capable of sustainable evolution in the same manner as what occurred on earth over millions of years.

And people don't think there will be millions of other planets with a head start on earth? This is beyond a lack of common sense, it's humanity's delusion based purely on ego. Human existence is still somewhat "special" in the sense that probably only 2 percent of the universe has life and even less of a percentage has intelligent life, but that 1-2 percent means there are million of other species who share sentience abilities.

At some point contact is going to be made and people's minds will be blown. The religious folk will start to panic and change the bible. There will be massive chaos and breakdown of society. And over what? Because people are too stupid to realize what should be painfully obvious to a semi-intelligent 12 year old.

We dont know if intelligent life exists, its not a matter of probability rather the fact there has been no hint or evidence of any simple life never mind complex. Maybe the process to start life is actually much rarer than we thought? Until we find hard evidence of a civilization then the Fermi Paradox will remain.

That's right, Char, we need to start finding bugs on Saturn's moons first. They've got to be more plentiful than conveniently bipedal Rubber-Forehead Aliens. Intelligence, at least the kind that we fancy that we have, is probably extremely rare, and the 'verse is doubtless loaded with examples of the other kind.

Imagine that.

Intelligent life is not inevitable. Our Ancestors are thought to have developed larger brains as a result of a mutation that caused a jaw defeciency. It's due to a random mutation that we're discussing this right now on the internet. Safe to say that the vast, vast majority of planets that develop lifeforms will never give rise to intelligent beings. We may never know just how rare we are.

reply

Contact has already been made, we just don't know about it,...yet!

reply

What makes you think that "Millennials" don't believe there are other life forms in the universe? Where do you get that idea?

"The religious folk will start to panic and change the bible. "

If you had a clue as to what is written in the Bible, you'd see how utterly inept your comment is. The Bible is the only book that explains that we COME from pre-existing life that exists far outside of our universe. And that same life has made contact with us both through his son and through the messages in his word.Just because they're not little green men, you choose not to believe in them.
I agree that 'peoples minds will be blown', but by then it will be too late.It certainly wont be true Christians who will be panicking!

“Also, there will be signs in the sun and moon and stars,+ and on the earth anguish of nations not knowing the way out because of the roaring of the sea and its agitation. People will become faint out of fear and expectation of the things coming upon the inhabited earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But as these things start to occur, stand up straight and lift up your heads, because your deliverance is getting near.” Luke 20:25-28

And I saw when he opened the sixth seal, and a great earthquake occurred; and the sun became black as sackcloth made of hair, and the entire moon became as blood, and the stars of heaven fell to the earth as when a fig tree shaken by a high wind drops its unripe figs. And the heaven departed as a scroll that is being rolled up, and every mountain and every island was removed from its place. Then the kings of the earth, the high officials, the military commanders, the rich, the strong, every slave, and every free person hid in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains. And they keep saying to the mountains and to the rocks: “Fall over us and hide us from the face of the One seated on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb, because the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?” Revelation 6:12-17

reply

Huh? I don't understand your point. First off aren't Christian churches in a bit of a "crisis" because membership numbers are dwindling due to millennials not attending?

Second why do you think making contact with aliens will have any effect on Christians or other religions? I'm sure the only change we'll see is a few new religions founded to worship the aliens.

I'm sure if we made contact or observed an alien species the ones that didn't believe they could exist will feel silly. But, as an atheist, I'd feel a little silly if a god came down and introduced itself to me.

Aliens are fun to think about and debate, but as of now they have zero impact on 99.9999999999% of the world. So they likely spend little to no time contemplating the science behind the arguments.

What makes you think it's a millenial thing?

What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.

reply

Actually there's more evidence to support humans are meant to be alone than not. Finding aliens has got to be the dumbest idea ever. There's nothing out there but rocks and maybe some old farts floating around. When you die, you will be alone and cease to exist.

reply

Yep, you sure told 'em.
