One thing sci-fi and horror have in common these days

Both genres are usually looked down upon by certain critics and audiences and don't get the respect they deserve, but in recent years we're getting critically acclaimed movies from both genres.

To my knowledge neither genre has ever won BEST PICTURE. It always seems to go to an artsy fartsy medium or low budget "drama".

In 1977 Star Wars did NOT win best picture and HURT LOCKER beat AVATAR for best picture in 2009.

Terminator 2 Judgement Day is among the most famous movies ever and it did not win best picture in 1991 and Empire Strikes Back is one of the best sci fi movies ever. Most Star Wars fans prefer it over the original. It also did not win best picture.

And in the horror category The Exorcist and Invasion of the Body Snatchers both failed to win that award despite being masterpieces.

reply

Yeah, people are biased so those two genres don't get awards, despite sometimes being better than movies which did get awards.

Silence of the Lambs won best picture and is widely considered to be a horror film, or at least part horror.

But you're right, otherwise, no other horror or sci-fi has ever really won. They are occasionally nominated though, such as The Exorcist or The Sixth Sense. Black Swan is probably the most recent.

Tentacles. And Jump Scares.

You're more advanced than a cockroach, ever tried explaining yourself to one of them?
