What's poor about it? It may not have recieved quite as much praise, but it was definitely praised, in some quarters just as much. It was more complex in a way, which probably put some people off, but, hey, look at the initial reactions to 2001, today widely regarded as the greatest SF-film of all time, if not the best film it all time (in my book it is.)
