What's the point?

I really enjoyed the movie- had to use some brain power...
But what's the point of the 'gift'?
I can't see how it benefits Louise or humanity.
It was darn interesting, but sad really.
And to help the aliens in 3000 years!?!

Well, it's open to the interpretation. You can even think that aliens are secretive jerks becuase they just used humanity so aliens can be saved in the future by giving them the language, if you want.

My take on the point of the movie was that since the aliens only gave 1/12 codes that it was to unify humanity. That was the "tool" or as I saw it as a "gift" because the aliens need our help in 3000 years. They brought peace. As far as Amy Adams arc I think it was to show her to view time in a different light.

reply

Yes, and they also believe that their way of seeing time is superior.

As I pointed out in my reply to the "11 flaws" thread, if you see all of time as one thing, nothing is at stake, and people act more rationally. It's clear they have no word for "weapon" and thought it meant "tool."

Prepare your minds for a new scale of physical, scientific values, gentlemen.
