Spoiler question
What decision of hers made him leave? Was it having a baby that she knew would die young of cancer?
shareWhat decision of hers made him leave? Was it having a baby that she knew would die young of cancer?
shareIt was because of the fact she could now see into the future because she had mastered the alien language, which gave her that ability and knew they were going to have a baby that would eventually die young from cancer. She knew this before they had even got married and had a baby. She made the decision to go ahead with that life anyway.
There is a scene where she tells her daughter daddy left because he said she made the wrong choice, referring to the fact she knew there daughters fate but went ahead with that life anyway. So when she told him what was going to happen he left, disagreeing with her decision.
Ok, that's what I was thinking. Thanks. (And thank you for posting a polite reply! Have received some quite angry replies by daring to question this movie.)

I don't think it was having the baby that caused the split, it was that she told him their daughter would die, and so he had the knowledge with him whenever he saw their daughter (the daughter remarks at one point how he looks at her differently).
I don't think he ever learned the language in the same way she did, so he wasn't able to see time differently. She was able to create the circles on the barrier with abott and costello, he never did that.
"You'll find it's a very small universe when I'm angry with you"
Thanks - I didn't connect those two points!
shareMentrilo has it correctly.
She finally reached a point where she couldn't keep the secret, and told him of their daughter's fate. He couldn't deal with that knowledge, and thought that choosing to tell him was a bad decision.
Prepare your minds for a new scale of physical, scientific values, gentlemen.share
The real problem is that of nested catalyst (e.g. The Butterfly Effect). See, for her to not be able to change the past*/future means that time is singular and linear. And this would be hardcoded from the zeroth dimension upwards.
But apparently, their language allows to see something linear as non-linear.
Which is pseudo-scientific and cute.
(* It is now also the past since she witnessed it prior to it happening.)
Enjoy these words, for one day they'll be gone... All of them.
