Any of y'all catch the 2001 homages


The first homage, obviously, the black monotone spaceships very much harkening to the monoliths. Second, when military starts their trek to the spaceship, that was very much inspired by the moon trek to the monolith. And third, when Louise meets the colonel and Renner on the helicopter, the lighting was tinted cold blue. Similar lighting was used in the scene where Heywood Floyd was being briefed on the spaceship about the monolith. Anyway, good stuff. Been a good last few years for smart, grounded sci fi. Def check it out

I'd say that people calling the movie boring and pretentious is yet another homage to 2001.

I love 2001, and even I'll admit its pace was hard to digest at points. This movie, while not very action heavy, moved a lot quicker and didn't feel as weighty as 2001, which isn't necessarily a bad thing

Yeah, I was just joking. It always make me laugh when people call a movie boring, when there's stuff like Solaris and 2001, which are much more slow paced. The pacing doesn't dictate if a movie is good or bad.

I noticed that almost every movie is called boring here, which is sad. Hell, a lot of them are called pretentious too. I kid you not, someone once called Paranormal Activity pretentious.

I have the same reaction and then some, because there's a whole world of movies out there that make 2001 and Solaris look like action thrillers. The Turin Horse is one of the two slowest-paced movie I've ever seen. I found it mesmerizing and unforgettable.

(The other one is The Assassin, which I saw while badly sleep-deprived. I kept dozing off and waking up five or ten or fifteen seconds later, but I didn't miss anything because when I opened my eyes, nothing on the screen had changed at all!)

Prepare your minds for a new scale of physical, scientific values, gentlemen.

The Turin Horse is one of the two slowest-paced movie I've ever seen.


Ah yes, I heard about the other movie from that director called "Satantango" which is 7 hours long. There's even a movie called Out 1 which is 12 hours long. What would people think of those?

I never said 2001 was bad or boring because of its pace. Not at all. It's an absolute favorite of mine, and i can admit, lots of patience is required to sit through it in full at points.

Close, not 2001, but instead homage to Clarke's 'Rendezvous with Rama' (featureless space/time vehicles). The monoliths in 2001 are not vehicles, they're actually sentient, as we discover later in '3001: The Final Odyssey.'

I saw a lot of homage to 'Contact' too. Moreso than 2001: ASO.

There's the CGI version of Amy Adams "bewildered" face and hair, same as Jodie Fosters in 'Contact.'

Fair enough, but the black monoliths are just so iconic that whenever a shot includes those ships in the distance, those monoliths are all that i could think about(in a good way, mind you)

I work in design, and the only semblance I saw was color. /shrug

Design is different, granted, but the way it was looming over the characters in some of the shots, imo, still references the way the apes and the humans in the future are dwarfed by the monolith in 2001.

Well said, you do have me thinking about it more. The Monoliths "teach" a species science, tool usage, and cataloging without the need to communicate with them. It's some "magic" rewiring in their brains, and wireless.

'Arrival' sorta-kinda hints at this with linguistics rewiring a human brain for science (no), tool usage (no), and cataloging* (nope)... instead, ink-circles leading to precognitive, time-bending magic.

What a mess.


(* Cataloging is the mother of all Math.)
