The thing I found most preposterous was...

I won't cast judgement on the movie as a whole, clearly some people love it, others not so much. The thing I found most preposterous in the whole narrative was that the US would be the country exercising patience and not attacking the alien ship. If there is one thing we know for sure, it is that the USA would be the first country to try to blow the *beep* out the alien pod.

HAHAH, I was thinking the same thing. US has always had the "neutralise the threat, ask questions later" approach.

If anything, the film tries to create unfounded fear in the Other. In this case, China. Which is basically owning everything in every single aspect, and will continue to do so for the next decade or so.

Viewed in this way, this is a broad stroke of mass propaganda.

Political propaganda

The US of A does nothing wrong...ever! It is always those sneaky Russians and crafty Chinese that stir things up. Also when in doubt, blame it on Russian hackers!

I'm gonna miss posts like this.

I guess the writer didn't count on a short-fused nutcase winning the election.

Too true. Gonna miss these message boards, they were/are the best thing about imdb.

The Americans were the first to be overtly hostile.
The Chinese were peforming offensive maneuvers but did not attack. It was the rogue soldiers who planted the bomb which was the first aggressive action against them.
But yes, silly.
