We'll find out that Combo is ...

Mixed race :3

Stephen Graham briefly mentioned this in his interview with The Guardian and a various other time before, but I'll post a transcript of his interview with Film4,

Speaking of the scene with Milky at the end of This Is England it's described that,

"When Stephen's on the bed at the end, looking at Milky, he's not getting upset with him because he's black: he's getting upset with him because he's *beep* black as well. Stephen wrote a back story for Combo's character, and Combo's father was mixed-race. But he's never been able to admit it. None of the characters knew, but everyone involved on the film knew that Stephen was going into it from a mixed-race background."

What do you think?

As I'm almost 99.99% sure this'll be mentioned when Combo and Milky inevitably collide in This Is England '90.

All comments are welcomed.

I think it would be a great natural conclusion. I think Lol has an idea as do most of the gang but they were to scared to mention it in front of Combo because of his involvement with the NF at the time.

Combo tried / did repent with his battering of Lols father and it would be interesting to see how this is played out with his release and subsequent meeting with Milky.

That last scene when Combo is sent back to prison and meets the Governess again is classic Meadows, turning Combo from Vilain to Anti-Hero and finally Hero.

Combo is definitely not a hero!

For what he sacrificed for Lol.....it puts him up there. Dude gets out of prison only to find his mom has died while on his way to see her. Then he decides to go see the woman he loves for the first time only to find her covered in her fathers blood.

I'm interested in seeing if he's truly changed. Knowing Meadows work, I think Combo's bound to have a major f_ck up again to close out the series. Taking his anger out on Milky seems too obvious though. He's already done that. But I can't imagine he's too happy about Milk knocking Lol up, despite suggesting that he's okay with it in his one scene in '88.

Now pick a political party, a news network, and bumper sticker and start getting mean.

I just re watched this last night, compo 100% knows about lol and milky, he even says to her in the prison meeting scene how is little lisa, is milky a good father and she says yeah when he's around but we don't see him much and then compo says how's woody and she says he has a new bird I don't see him much either.
Loved the character turn round for compo, from the movie to the end of 88 he's a completely different man, looking forward to seeing what he does in 90

We know that Meadows had spoken Combo's backstory, and I'm still confident it may go down this route; especially with an inevitable encounter with Milky as the episode 2 has all but confirmed.

Compo from Last of the Summer Wine makes an appearance in This is England ? :)

This revelation shall occur :3

The photo he was looking at at the end of the 3rd episode would support this, probably meant to be his father.

reply

What photo? :3

reply

He had some photos in his hand, the top one was a black and white photo of a black/mixed-race man in some kind of work gear. Combos eyes were tearing up as he looked at it.

reply

I didn't notice the photo :3

That sucks then. I'm not really a fan of race-baiting.

I'm still rather confident this'll be explored in a sequel to '90.

As there were to many unresolved issues, and I for one believe the open ended nature of Milk in This is England to Combo's in '90 were rather similar. For all we know Combo's father could have had a role to play within the recent events.
