Literally the exact same wound as Kylo Ren received when Rey healed him.

Maybe Rey can 'force time travel' and save him. I'm sure she could easily do that should the plot require it.
I'm willing to believe that Jedi talents vary somewhat, and that some Jedi can heal miraculously and others arent as good, just like some Jedi are master pilots and others arent. And that we didnt see all possible Jedi powers, in the first 12 hours of Star Wars films.
And I like the idea, because healing is a traditional good-person magical skill, both in genre fiction and the myths of this planet. Jedi *ought* to be able to heal, it's one of the things that differentiates good magic/Force use from evil. Evil has no use for healing abilities, it can only destroy.
Except that in the SWU it's not. Plus there was never any mention of it and it was so super awesome rey could heal the big bad misunderstood creature that just randomly lets them live afterwards because she is so awesome and pure. Then she comes out with basically "I just made it up, aren't I the best!" as an explanation.
Also rey is not a jedi at all.
It's also possible that Rey's powers are not standard Jedi issue, because of her ancestry.
But she sure as hell wouldn't get Healing powers from her grandpa, would she! Really, at that point in the story it would have been better if she'd killed the creature with Sith Bug-Zapper Lighting, and everyone said "OMG that's a Sith power! Why can you do Sith stuff!". That would have created suspense, and made her struggle to stay on the Light Side a bit more dramatic. But no! They wanted to jam the Force-healing power in somehow so they could use it in the finale, so they put it there!
They really didn't think this stuff out.

They totally made up that they wanted rey to heal kylo after leia tries to kill him first and then tried to shoe horn in how she made up the skill somewhere later.
This is what happens when corporates write a script.
They should have fit the Healing powers in earlier, when she's at the rebel encampment. Show or mention that Leia is teaching her how to use the Force to heal, and maybe have her say that her Healing powers are failing, while she can still hack things to bits with a light saber like a champ. That would have given the audience a clue that her Light powers were fading and the Dark powers were getting stronger. And if they'd made the point that healing was strictly a light-sided power, Darth Emo's final scene would have been a lot more powerful.
They really needed to spend more time on the script, but they had a special effects schedule to meet if they wanted to get the film out for the Christmas big-bucks season.

But thanks to baby YODA we now know force healing is just a legit Jedi power. Rey didn’t do anything special. Baby YODA healed someone.
So Disney are legit now trying to make force healing a thing even though it flys in the face of years of Star Wars lore and damages not only past Star Wars movies and shows, but also their own Star Wars shows and movies.
Honestly it’s just easier to believe anything that is set after the OT is not canon and is just Disney’s version of the EU. So much of their stuff is making no sense with the Star Wars history.

It seems the force works that way. There's no instruction manual for leaving your body for instance. It seems like when you're ready to do that, you know how.
Plus is fits into the plot of having people who can keep the emperor alive forever.
I didn't see it as being a horribly stupid use of the Force since that is the life force.

The force is the life force of all living things. People can sense others, talk to others, remain ALIVE WITH NO BODY, and so it's is not a stretch to think it can heal. You can move and pick up things with it, so why not manipulate what is going on in the body?
Plus, this is the end of the story with massively powerful force users.
