Having Leia be a fully CGI character wouldn't really work, but if she either died between films and was a Force Ghost, or was say, on the other end of the Galaxy and communicating with short hologram messages, she could be recreated with CGI, but respectfully so, and the blue tint and distortion of holograms/ghosts could cover the lack of realism?
shareI am sure they could, and to be honest the Tarkin from R1 was better for me than it would have been if they went sans CGI and recast it entirely. I don't think it would be disrespectful more so its too soon for some people and between them and the people that like to whine about everything the backlash wouldn't be worth it. And nothing occurred in TFA and TLJ that makes her essential enough to whats left of the plot to need to do this. They can even have a homage to her mother and say she lost the will to live after the loss of her husband, brother, and turning of her son.
