Star wars universe: No language barriers.

I love how every character - mecha and orga alike - in the Star Wars universe either speaks English (and often with a British or Italian accent), or speaks in ANY language, but understands (and is understood by) everyone else in the SWU.

C3PO just got made redundant.

They speak Basic which is a universal language.

Luke had to use a translator or C3PO to understand RT-D2. And in the Cantina scene, Luke didn't understand that alien who hated him. Jango spoke to Boba in a foreign language that Obiwan didn't understand. C3PO translated for Jabba. Just a few examples.

Very true. You are right. And no one understood the Ewoks without 3P0. I made my point a little too quickly LOL.

I think what I mainly noticed was Han and Chewie. Or Han and Jabba. They spoke and argued back and forth like there was no communication barrier at all.

What stumped me the most is that Jabba understood Han and Luke perfectly, which meant he understood English but could never speak it. When C3P0 needed to translate communication between Jabba and Zuckuss, the bounty hunter (Leia in disguise) he translated to both sides using only English, but never the two languages. Between the two, English was never the language spoken. That made zero sense to me.

I have always thought of the "language barrier" in sci-fi shows as simply the story is being told to us and as such it is being told to us in English. There are times when English is not used but usually it is to identify a plot point or to emphasize a character's language separation from the other characters in the film/show.
