There is an old interview in which he says he wants to make a movie that divides the audience with half hating it and half loving it which was more desirable than making a good movie that everybody loved. He obviously chose to ruin the Star Wars lore on purpose in order to create controversy.

I don't understand it, from a business prospective, or a creative prospective. Intentionally pissing off half of the people that come to see your film seems like a real dick move. It was very appropriate how the guy in the video played Michael Caine's speech about how some people just want to watch the world burn from "The Dark Knight" after the Rian Johnson footage.
