What if I told you TFA was just as bad & people are now just "awakening" to that fact?
A friendly reminder they killed off the EU for this hot garbage.

They should have complimented the EU and worked off of its template, instead of discarding it. My goodness, it's so much better than these two sequel episodes.
shareVery much this. They would have been better off with the approach of taking the good and leaving out the bad. It still surprises me how easily this went over with most of the fan base though I suppose I shouldn't be since so many were practically giddy about Di$ney taking over when I was horrified.
shareIt's not so much as Di$ney taking over, but giving Kathleen Kennedy full control over the ST which resulted in her pushing bullshit feminist agenda and unnecessary social commentary instead of a properly structured story for every movie.
shareI disagree that TFA is worst only because JJ Abrams made an attempt to keep within SW lore. Johnson tossed it out by contradicting past movies.
I don't care what Disney says, the EU is canon for me.
Well I said it was just as bad but when I think about it more blame should be placed on Jar Jar for laying the groundwork of awful more so than on R. Johnson for not turning garbage into gold and adding his own garbage to the pile along the way. I don't see that was J.J. was more respectful to Star Wars lore. Just to name a few major issues...
~ Resetting the state of the galaxy to pre ANH, essentially erasing what our heroes accomplished at the end of ROTJ.
~ Having Han Solo regress back to the petty smuggler he was introduced as in ANH & dies meaningless death.
~ Luke is a failure and a coward who abandoned his friends and allies, leaving them to their fates. R. Johnson could have concocted an elaborate excuse for Luke but again J.J. already laid the groundwork.
~Ma'Rey Sue... You want to talk about disrespecting lore. Jar Jar Abrams gave us a protagonist who could master force powers in seconds/minutes without even being told about them let alone trained. We can go on all day about that "character".
JJ copied the previous SW movies so at least we know he actually watched them. Johnson was making up things out of his head that contradicted the originals and Abrams' movies. Johnson's script was amateurish and he changed characters, ignored previous storylines and plot in order to fit it to his crappy vision. Any fan could've done a much better job continuing the story.
Resetting the story back to the original plot seems more like a Disney move than Abrams. They wanted the era which was popular with fans as opposed to the prequels or something entirely untested and new. I don't agree with it, but I understand it from a commercial point of view. I thought the Han regression was stupid, too.
Luke was seeking a way to defeat the First Order and there was a map he created if he was needed. But, Johnson was the one who turned optimistic Luke into an old fearful crank in hiding.
Rey had visions and there were plenty of hints to imply that she was someone special (Skywalker?) and she had a possible memory wipe. Johnson turned her into a nobody who knows everything about the Force without training.
Johnson not only ruined his movie, but also Abrams' by not continuing the story and answering questions.
I'm listening to a 5 hour negative (yes, 5 hours!) review of Last Jedi that is tearing that movie completely apart scene by scene.

Disney should reboot the last trilogy, but won't. Therefore, I'll just read the true canon books starting with "Heir to the Empire".
Yes, I listened to that too! I started out of curiosity thinking there is no way I'm going to listen to all 5 hours as that would be insane but I found it so engrossing I was disappointed when it ended. It really is just a litany of failure after failure and the most damning thing - not in itself but what it represents - is when he points out that at some point they keep switching between called them the 'Resistance' and the 'Rebels'. Such a small thing but it just shows the utter contempt these movies have for story, continuity and consistency.
This said TFA is absolutely one of the worst films ever made. It takes effort, it really does, to spend $200 dollars and end up in a worse position than before but that is what happened: we have a reboot nobody asked for and a beloved trilogy that is now tainted by the knowledge that the story is going to get wiped out so Disney can make a few bucks.
But arguing over which is worse, TFA or TLJ is a little philosophical as one can not exist without the other. Which is worse? The mosquito or the malaria it carries?

I agree that Force Awakens was a rehash which I wasn't happy about, but I still enjoyed the new characters, seeing the original ones (yeah, Han's regress was dumb) and the suspense.
Force Awakens had fans theorizing for two years and hopeful that the sequel would provide interesting answers to its' many questions.
Last Jedi has angered and alienated fans. I know hardcore fans who are no longer enthusiastic about the movies now. Worst, Disney & co. are acting as if there's something wrong with the fans for not accepting a really bad script. What he did to Luke's character is unforgivable.
I detested Last Jedi so much, it retroactively ruined my enjoyment of Force Awakens. LOL.
Force Awakens = B; Last Jedi = F; Force Awakens after seeing Last Jedi = C

Ahh. Jar Jar's empty mystery boxes. While that's some very calculated fan theory bait it isn't good writing.

"I hated TFA so much that with my expectations being so low I was barely phased by TLJ."
This explains everything. My expectations were very high.
BTW, I agree with the criticism of TFA, but I still found enough good things in the movie to outweigh the bad. With the exception of a few visually interesting scenes and music, there is nothing good in TLJ for me.
There may be the possibility of a complete reboot of these sequels if Abrams makes a complete mess of Episode 9 (likely) and Disney sees box office losses going forward.
It's hard to believe anyone couldn't remember a single scene from TFA.
Like it or not, there's the "traitor" part, forest duel, Han Solo, and of course the ending. I haven't watched the movie in over a year, but it has plenty of memorable moments. Not too much OTT humour either.
