Seriously, its like this movie doesn't exist anymore. I hear nobody talk about it. No fan theories, no fan speculation. Its so quiet. Its different when you compare it to TFA or even Rogue One.
Not really a good sign for Lucasfilm and Disney...
I'd say it's because of over-inundation. Knew it the moment they announced Rogue One. It's just too much, there's no restraint. I really liked this movie. I'll continue to see them (while hating myself for being a good little consumer) because I'm a completionist. And I was born in '85, so I can't speak from firsthand experience like someone who saw the OT first run. But when they're being released in endless waves like they are now, yeah, they're still fun potentially, but they're no longer special.
Because Ep IX. Okay even if they show him as a Force ghost, Luke is essentially gone. We know there will be no more Leia. While purists of the OT will associate certain performers with certain roles, realistically, costumed characters such as Chewbacca and the droids can be played by virtually anyone. We've already seen instances of recasting in these.
They just cycle too fast now. Lord knows we'll see Episodes X-XII, wherein Rey is new Luke. But they go so fast now, it'll be ten years from now, and Rey will either be played by someone else, or Daisy will have heavy old make-up/CGI. Because Disney is relentless about pressing forward. Again, still fun, but no longer *as* special.
A completionist...I feel ya! Seen every opening day since inception of the franchise and have to finish it...luckily I will see nine at a press event so no money for the mouse from me...but it really sucks not having Star Wars anymore!
I did not see episode 4 and 5 in theaters as I wasn't born yet and while I did see episode 6, I was too young to remember. I can miss episode 9 in the theaters.
Same here. All my fav OT characters are either dead in the movies or dead in real life. I loved the new characters introduced in TFA, but hated them in TLJ. So there's nothing left for me in this trilogy.
When Disney purchased Lucasfilm to basically MCU the Star Wars franchise, it was the beginning of the end.
Not only is the canon going forward being changed, a lot of the historical canon is being rewritten.
Rogue One is like bad fan fiction that messes with the Star Wars (1977) back story. The Last Jedi gives users of The Force superhero qualities. I guess that is where Disney wants this to go.
And no ... I don't want Lucas back. His Special Editions and Prequels showed that he had no idea what was important in the original trilogy.
the MCU is fantastic. The problem is, they are NOT MCU'ing the Star Wars franchise. If only they would. Because MCU'ing does mean introducing new and cool characters in new movies that aren't hugely connected to what came before it. Problem is the Star Wars movies are just rehashes of storylines we already saw. Rebels again, a new Empire-like faction. Its the same fucking think every time. MCU actually creates new stories. Sure they sometimes follow the same themes, but they aren't pure ripoffs. They also play with different genres within the MCU. SW doesn't. Its all the same bullshit.
MCU is great. Lucasfilm sucks. Lucas's PT was great in my opinion (except Phantom Menace). And yes the changes to the OT are shit. But even all that is way better than whatever the fuck TLJ was..
I don't really want to get into the merits of the MCU here; I will just say it is pretty boring with the superhero flavor and villain of the month. Disney is making Star Wars into the similar Sith villain and Death Star like super space weapon of the month.
Force power creep is getting as bad as playing MTG with an old deck. Force projection across the universe? Really?
Can anyone tell me why Rian Johnson decided to create a new character to sacrifice herself when Admiral Ackbar was there for his redemption? We could care less about the new character. In fact, her plans and actions were inexcusable for the leader of anything. I wouldn't even want her to pick a side in a phys ed softball game.
As for Ackbar... I don't think Rian appreciates nonhuman characters much, or just doesn't know what to do with them. R2 and Threepio were barely in TLJ, mostly as nostalgic callbacks. Chewie was barely there. Rian can't humanize nonhuman characters. He turned BB8 into a juggernaut. As a writer and director, Rian has many limitations. I wouldn't hire him.
new characters is NOT the problem with TLJ or the ST. BADLY written characters are. and like Frogarama says, the nonhuman and existing nonhuman characters are being butchered.
OK. Why is Rogue One "bad fan fiction"? It's just a movie that fills in what must've been a plothole to many fans: why would the Death Star be so deliberately easy to destroy to anybody who knew how, having the plans? It's interesting that the designer of the Death Star would want to sabotage his own creation, don't you think?
Also (and I take great offence to what you said, hence the insult), Lucas did more to broaden the backstory to the OT than anyone else ever could, and created some very good and detailed world-building in the Prequels, even if they could've been executed better. I would think that the blatant ANH rehash of TFA and the character assassination and disassembling in TLJ would prove that these movies would still be better under ANYONE other than Kathleen Kennedy, JarJar Abrams and Rian Johnson. I for one would have love to have seen what Lucas had in mind for Episodes 7-9, except now what we've ended up with is complete crap, and I don't really care anymore, nor do most people now.
It wasn't easy to destroy, it required a force user to do it... it was a major off chance. The fact that this major off chance that required a force user to accomplish was a "designed flaw" is more of a plothole than anything.
They would have better aim to the exhaust port if they just approached the Death Star going straight at the port. Then the torpedo could launch straight forward instead of awkwardly curving into the hole. Also, no need for flying down the trench. A New Hope is actually kind of a sloppy movie in ways. Odd ways.
They were exposed to the guns on their approach no matter what. They had to fly toward the trench, so might as well fly right toward the goal instead of flying toward a part of the trench that is so far from the goal.
But then we wonder, are there MORE surface cannons near the exhaust port? That would imply the Empire knew ahead of time it was a weakness, but they only notice what the Rebels are going for DURING the battle, when one of the officers comes to Tarkin to tell him about analyzing the attack patterns and that they found a possible vulnerability.
I don't know what the "main port" is, I tried looking it up but all I found is info that the exhaust port isn't even in the trench, it's in a different trench perpendicular to the equatorial trench they fly down.
I agree ... the design flaw doesn't even make sense because the port was ray shielded, was defended against capital ships, and needed a Force user to hit it properly.
The end where Vader lets the plans slip through the door doesn't match the dialogue in Star Wars, and makes it obvious that Leia has the plans in the blockade runner. The whole beginning of ANH is no longer congruent with the canon that Rogue One writers just made up in rewrites.
Watch Rogue One and then ANH, and you will see what I mean. It is laughable.
Oh ... the prequels ... that back story is terrible. It basically means that Anakin could not be redeemed in The Return of the Jedi. The guy was a insolent psychotic child murdering stalker.
Jar Jar Binks? Where to even start with that abomination.

Yes, at the beginning of ANH, Vader should be saying "Girl, I just SAW YOUR SHIP escaping and followed you, don't give me this diplomatic bullshit!"

Vader didn’t see Leia. And I’m sure there are multiple diplomatic ships that look like hers. We see them up to hyperspace and get away, meaning Vader just saw a random ship for a second.
Why not? Vader calls her out on all the BS when she says they're on a diplomatic mission to Alderran. Even before Rogue One, the interaction between them was that Leia was lying and Vader knew better without either one really stating what happened previously. Vader never says anything like "I know you have the Death Star plans because ..." He just knows they have them. Meanwhile, C-3P0 says "There will be no escape for the princess this time" since they escaped earlier. Vader also said "There will be no one to stop us this time" because he saw the Rebels stopped him from getting the plans. What specific lines don't make sense?
The media led hype and disney marketing machine? We are three movies into this already, while there was a lot of media hype and disney marketing the environment around me at work and in my area was not the same. There was not the excitement people had for TFA or even the PT. You can see part of the issue in the merchandising which has dropped off for this film. I think this film may be the over saturation tipping point. A not great film, the third film and three years with many characters that people simply are not connecting with like the did in the original trilogy or even in the PT.
Even though news media prestige has declined, they still have a massive impact on opening weekends. We are seeing it with Black Panther and we saw it with TLJ. Hopefully Black Panther is a better film than TLJ.
Hmm true.
The hype for the PT was big though (at least in my area). And I loved Episdoe 3, its my fav SW movie.
The problem with TLJ is that most OT characters were misused and the new characters from TFA are boring. in TFA they were cool, but in TLJ they are kinda ruined. Makes people not at all hyped for episode 9...

I know, I personally can't stand Rey and Kylo Ren, Poe is too ridiculously good at his job, and Finn comes across as stupid. Why should we root for these characters again? reply share
That's what happens when a movie shits on beloved characters, and treats the fans like garbage. Just endless "gotcha" moments at the expense of the characters, the story, everything.
How about this for fucking it up: In a shocking climactic twist, HAN DIES! Then, someone takes up his "mantle" and adopts his name. It's a CGI-face Young Harrison Ford!
That's a horrible reminder of what happened with Indiana Jones, when it looked like Shia LeBoeuf was going to replace Harrison Ford, but luckily, Indy kept the Fedora away from "Mutt" for the time being.
