In ep7 people paired him with Rey (and even Poe), in this he is a sideshow character paired with average chinese girl.

That was already his role. He was regulated to sidekick for everybody. First he's plays the role of Poe's sidekick, Then Rey, & then Han. Since he's written as just a guy with no noteworthy skills or talents he's often in a position of following behind someone else's lead.

And they ruined his big reunion with Rey by having him get sexually assaulted by Lumpy the Asian Wondergirl.
